AJ
Anyone planning to have a gun rebarreled this year? Maybe have a new stock installed on your old faithfull? Now is the time to start thinking about it as its often a slow time for some gunsmiths. They will welcome the work and can get it back to you in time for next hunting season. Some of the more popular gunsmiths are backlogged over a year. Do your research now and get the ball moving.
Guest bronco_mudder
Re: Custom or Semi Custom Guns I've been thinking of a couple of cheaper projects, nothing real fancy. I've read great things about the Stevens rifles Savage has been putting out, and have been tossing around the idea of getting one in 7mm-08 and having it rechambered to an improved version. And basically the same in a Remington SPS, but in .260. The Remington can always be improved upon later, I like the 700 action, so that's the plus I see for that project, it will likely end up being the first I do. hangunnr
Re: Custom or Semi Custom Guns I'm awaiting the return of a Smith 29 that has been rebarreled, dehorned and hardchromed. I've also got 3 XP100 projects in various states of completion. One is gonna be a 221 fireball rechamered to .223Rem. The second is gonna be a mid grip 300WSM with a 18" heavy barrel and the last is gonna be a repeater in 6.5X284 with a 18" barrel. Who knows what else might pop up..... hangunnr

iron buck
Re: Custom or Semi Custom Guns While I am waiting for my 35 Whelen project to come back from Gary Stiles (an 18 month wait) I am planning 2 other projects. The first one is another mauser , Charles Daly Zastava (Mark X).............soon to be Remington 798 since Remington bought the rights to sell Zastavas here. Anyway, Remington will not be selling actions or barreled actions so I picked up another action in left hand while I still could. I will have Gentry put on his 3-position safety & my buddy will put on a 22" Douglas #2 profile. It will be finished in matte blue & have a synthetic or lami stock. I have yet to decide. I want a light(er) weight hunter. If I go wood (lami) I'll do my own stock work. Which is probably the way I am heading. I have yet to find some one who will make me an econamical LH synthetic Mauser stock. It will be a bit heavier with lami.........but durable & stable. The other project is in long term planning. I picked up a LH M70 in 300 win mag (all I could get in the mad rush they had when news of USARCs shutting down production) I have one more Turkish Walnut blank that I will use on a Big Bore project. I have yet to decided if I will go 375HH.....416 rem or 458 Lott. I was considering 404 Jeffery until I found out how much dies & headstamped brass was. I will use Williams botom metal & replacement extractor. And most likely have Gary Stiles do the metal work, express sights, barrel band etc. And the stock work. Next Saturday I am heading to a gun show where Gary Stiles will show some of his completed projects. I will take my digital camera & get some pictures to post. He has done some AMAZING things. He has made a SxS 45-70 rifle from a Winchester model 21 shotgun. Doing all teh barrel work & regulation. He cuts actiuons in half to make log or short actions. He also makes left hand mausers by totally reworking old military actions. When finished they look like fatory jobs, with reworked ejection ports and everything. VermontHunter
Re: Custom or Semi Custom Guns Just planning on upgrading the composite black stock on the new .270 Browning to a wood laminate, if I can find one... Any suggestions or reccomendations as to where to look AJ ??
VTbowman
Re: Custom or Semi Custom Guns Boyds is a good one. However.... Do a search on laminate stocks. I found a site a while back thatn had some super looking designs and choices. A LOT of them too.... They were unfinished but only $99. Heck a bit of sanding and some TrueOil gun stock finish and your set. I plan to do a finish job on the grip and forend for mine soon... Its real easy and saves a ton of $$$$ which I know will get your attention. LOL IE: my laminate grip and forend unfinished is $115 shipped, finished it $250!!!! AJ
Re: Custom or Semi Custom Guns With Richards Microfit, I have heard its great or it sucks. With the chances being about even either way. I have not gotten any of their stocks but I have seen their stuff and its hit or miss. I have been tempted a few times in the past to get one, but these days, I prefer synthetic stocks.

How so? Being unfinsish and not 100% inletted you have to do some of the work yourself to get it installed to your barrle and action. Not rocket science but not for everyone thats for sure... LOL I have not gotten one nor seen one in person so I will have to take your word on it. But I'd like some more specifics since I was gonna get one for a 30.06 myself. That way I know what to look for. Thanks!
AJ
Re: Custom or Semi Custom Guns [ QUOTE ] Thats about the same with anything you order online isn't it? [/ QUOTE ] Nope, not even close. I have bought stocks from many places on line and all were top quality. By top quality I mean no gouges, the inletting was close, not over inletted (which I have seen on RMF), no knot holes, strong grain patterns, and overall good quality. I have seen RMF stocks that split their laminations due to bad inletting from factory. They said the owner did not install a crossbolt as they should have. This was not necessary on the caliber of the gun that the stock was for. It was their screw up (faulty product). And take a look on other forums, they are not the best name in the business. VTbowman
Re: Custom or Semi Custom Guns Thank you AJ, Its good to get a 3rd party opinion on something before to send off hard earned $$$. I really want a lam stock for the rifle though, any other suggestions? That site looked flashy and the prices seemed good. But its not worth the 50:50 risk IMHO. AJ
Re: Custom or Semi Custom Guns Might be 3rd party info, but I personally worked on the gun making it first hand experience. I stated earlier that I don't have any of their products, not that I didn't work on them. Here are some other online places that offer good laminated stocks: Wenig Great American I don't know if they do laminated stocks. Shehane Stocks Most of the plywood that is used in laminated stocks comes from your neck of the woods. Rutland Plywood Corp makes the laminated birch stocks that RMF uses. I used to buy laminated maple stocks from Western Gunstock Mfg. Co. : 408-688-5884 in Californina but they do not have a website. They were local for me, so it was a no brainer. iron buck
Re: Custom or Semi Custom Guns I went to a gun show out in Indiana PA . That is Strut 10 territory & my buddies & I met up with Don, his father & his friend to spend the morning looking at & talking about rifles..........life is good! Anyway, Gary Stiles the smith doing my 35 Whelen mauser was there . He had some of his work on hand that I though you guys might be interested in. The above picture shows some of his finished work & work in progress. The action in the white is a Montana action Gary stocked in California English. He used his Flur De Lise (SP???) checkering pattern. I liked it so much I am having him do this on my mauser stock. This is a side by side 45-70 rifle that Gary made himself based on a model 21 Winchester action. He did all the barrel work, regulation, case color & everything himself. This rifle looks truly awesome in person. A GREAT Pennsylvania bear hunting rig The unfinshed rifle in the middle here is a light weight mauser Gary is making for a client. English Walnut stock, schnable forend (ebony) and an octagonal/ round barrel that Gary turned himself from a varmint barrel. This was a great feeling little rifle. The bottom rifle in this picture really amazed me. And showed the talent that Gary has. He made his own Model 98 mauser based 22 rim fire. It has a trim action, octagonal 22 barrel that Gary milled from a blank. He took a Mauser 98 action, cut it down to 22 rimfire scale. He used an old Springfield 22 caliber training rifle action for the front half of the action. These were full sized Springfields in 22 rimfire that were used as military training rifles. He welded it all together forming a new action! The work was flawless. He did all the work himself & created the neatest little 22 I've ever seen.
