My leap of faith

As my current employer's division that I work in is for sale and I may not be included in the sale, I now have the opportunity to open my own retail sporting goods store in CO. This morning I filed to incorporate as 'Mountain View Outdoors, LLC' or some variation thereof. I have the non-financial support of three wise men who are already in their own very successful businesses, one guy has an MBA. In two weeks I meet with a commercial banker to try to get the operating capital. If all goes well in four weeks time I should be working for myself(or my wife) for the first time in 35 years. Here we go...

Re: My leap of faith

Congrats and good luck buddy, I hope it works out gangbustahs for you. laugh.gif

Just remember, you will not be able to compete with BPS and Cabellas on price so service is going to have to be your forte. Train your people well so they know what they are talking about and treat each and every customer like royalty....no matter how young or inexperienced they seem.

Most importantly, keep your buddies out of the SHOP! I swear that each time I go into a supposed pro shop and there is some sleepy looking idiot at the counter talking to the owner/operator, I turn and walk away. I have NEVER EVER been given good service when range rats and pro shop squatters were around. I buy LOTS of stuff but not at those shops. I will stop in, as a result, and look but I buy elsewhere.

Re: My leap of faith

We have a couple shops like up here. I hate it when i go in and find camo from the 30's and all the plastic packages are yellow. If i am paying full price i like the newer (maybe not latest but newer) stuff. I am sure you will do fine though, the market is a little more open down there for your stuff. Good luck and hey post some pics when you get a chance of the place.

Re: My leap of faith

Awesome, that would be a dream come true for me. I've always wanted to own my own corporation, right now I hope to start my own Graphic Design Firm within 8-10 years.

Good luck with it, just work hard and I'm sure things will work out.

You've picked the right market to target, us outdoorsy types will buy anything if we think it gives us an edge over the deer.

I was even duped into buying the cough silencer. grin.gif

Re: My leap of faith

Thank you all for the many kinds words of support.

The BNSF railroad has offered me a job just this morning for more money than I ever dreamed of making as a old railroad Boss. And the job is quite near my home. As much as I already have 16 years paid into my rr retirement account there is no way I can refuse their offer of a job to finish out my working career. It's something I have worked for and prayed for 6yrs since I got laid off as a conductor for the NS back east.

So I guess the store and 'leap of faith' will have to wait 7 years til I am 62.

Thank you all again.

Hope to see you at the Denver Outdoor Show on Jan 28...
