dogdoc
Re: Mineral Licks I'd get it out now so they will have time to find--they will probably start hitting it early spring. Personally I'd try to go with more of a true mineral mix than a high salt attractant. I don't know what the exact contents are of the two you mentioned. wtnhunt uses the trophy rock and has very good success with it. I mix my own using ice cream salt, dical phosphate, and red loose cattle mineral. I refreshen my licks every six months. todd
Guest Finn
Re: Mineral Licks I'd recommend getting it out now. This is when they start hammering the minerals. I've got a good mineral recipe that I pick up at Fleet Farm for around $50 for 300 pounds. If you're interested, let me know.
Leo
Re: Mineral Licks As soon as it starts too warm up deer crave salt. The earlier in their antler development they can get it the better. In general, if you put it in an area that has no security cover nearby or is further than 200yds from a water source they use, they'll ignore it. Resist the temptation of plunking it down in the middle of an established deer path. Put it 15 to 20yds to one side. They' ll find it. Bownarow
Re: Mineral Licks Can't put out mineral blocks in IL anymore, but I used to put them out while the snow was still on the ground. As the snow melts it helps the minerals dissolve into the soil. I would also dig some of the dirt out the site so the minerals do not just "wash away." bowhtr1
Re: Mineral Licks You can buy 1- 50 lb bag of di-calcium phosphate 1- 50lb bag of rock salt, 2-50 lbs bags of trace mineral salt. Mix this to make your own. I use a coffee can and make smaller batches. I can di-calcium, 1 can of rock salt and two cans of trace mineral. I still am getting pictures over my mineral sites now. I was getting over a hundred a week and I am down to around 20 to 30 a week. The sooner the better on getting it out so they can find it. I will freshen mine up the first of March. After that I freshen them up during the summer every month and a half. I stop in October. Good luck.

Ravin R10 man
Re: Mineral Licks get it out right now...the bucks need to get their body back in condition now, and the does are carrying fawns, just use a good 2 to 1 ratio of calcium to Phosphorous, and not more than 20% salt content
LETMGROW
Re: Mineral Licks I would be cautious of creating a lick in any area which has a deep snow cover. The lick may cause deer to congregate in a smaller area making it easier for coyotes or other predators to pattern deer movements. I'd wait until the threat of deep snow has passed. ousoonerfan22
Re: Mineral Licks Yesterday I filled up the feeder with corn and I didn't see any fresh tracks around the salt licks.
Guest 257Roberts
Re: Mineral Licks I just juiced mine up this last week with 2 parts white salt, 1 part trace mineral, 1 part di-calcium, and a little soda ash (same thing as deer cocain only it don't have a picture of a dee on it) The whole thing made over 200# of mix and for around 30 bucks. I wouldn't waste money on those store bought mixes. Be a do it your selfer. Get to know the folks at the coop too. They can be very helpfull. wtnhunt
Re: Mineral Licks Have used all sorts of mineral attractants, and the trophy rock seemed to get the best results. Thelocal dealer that used to carry them here went out of business though and they are kind of expensive. Plain red trace mineral blocks will work fine, so will loose minerals and dicalcium phosphate in bags from your local feed store. Deer cain and the other commercial minerals will also work well. Not sure why the rocks had so much more activity while we were using them, but they did. I try to keep my mineral sites replenished about every two months. The deer here will use them some all year long, but really hit them hard starting in the spring and the activity usually stays up through early fall, then drops off. Best time to start a mineral site is early spring.

rockefeller66
Re: Mineral Licks put them out in March and we buy 25 lb Apple flavored Deer Mineral blocks and they'll last a year, best to take a hammer and bust them up into small chunks and mix them in the ground, deer love them!
