Prediction

I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that the National Anthem for the super bowl is going to suck.

I heard on the radio this morning that Aretha Franklin, Aaron Neville and some other dude is/are "performing" the national anthem.

I've got a feeling they'll add their little pop/motown twist to it, which I hate. Seems to me the National Anthem should be sung in a traditional fashion like Carrie Underwood did for the Seattle/Carolina game.

OK, I'm done whining. tongue.gif

Re: Prediction

As a music educator and simi-professional musician I'll say this. To add to existing music in a way that personalizes it to the performer while keeping the spirit of the music can be very respectfull to the intent of the composer and can add to the enjoyment of the music. "for the land of the free" When you hear a vertuoso soprano hit that high "C" in the word free, your heart can jump and swell with pride. That not is not written. So is she ruining the music by changing it?

A good R&B singer adding couple riffs to the music is no less distracting to me then the twang in Rebba McEntire's voice or the nasle sound of Willy Nelson singing it with a country twist.

[/ QUOTE ] Here Here. I agree with you totally. I think the rhythm should be presented much the same but with their own little note changes. That's why Whitney Houston's version is one of my favorites. As long as they get the words right, that's what matters. Besides, I think Toby Keith's song should be our new national anthem. LOL

Re: Prediction

I have to agree with John. Personalization of music is fine. That's what this country is about. They are honoring the Anthem by singing/playing it in their style. If I don't like it I will not listen. While I enjoy listening to the SSB sung and played normally, I love the Jimmy Hendrix version.

Re: Prediction

As long as they get the words right and it is sung in a respectful manner, I don't see what the problem is. I can think of worse things. Someone adding a little "soul" to the way they sing it has nothing to do with how they feel about America so the attitude of "Love it or leave it" doesn't even remotely apply to this situation. If you don't want to hear a rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner sung by a couple of black singers, you can mute it, turn the channel, or "Love it or leave it." Isn't America great! This is the 21st Century isn't it, for a second I thought I was in the Civil War era.

Re: Prediction

You mean they might sing it like: TTTtttthhhhhIIIIIIssSSSSsssSSSSS? on and on?

I will say that Whitney Houston was the best I ever heard. That girl was something until she hooked up with Bobby Turd. I watched it in the desert during Desert Storm.......

Re: Prediction

Some interesting tidbits since we are discussing the anthem:

It was written as a poem, not a song.

The music it is sung to is not original, it is a tune called "The Anacreontic Song" which was considered a gentlemans constitutional song in England, most probably written in the 1760's-1770's.

The Anacreontic Society was a gentlemans music club in London named after greek poet Anacreon.

The Star-Spangled Banner didn't become the National Anthem until 1931.
