Re: Ever missed a deer?

Not in the last 10 - 12 years. I missed a few running shots over the years, have hit a tree limb a couple of times and once split a strand of barbed wire with a 30-06. Also missed 2 standing deer in an oat field in the same afternoon, checked my scope and it was shooting a foot high at 100 yards. That was, let's see, oh about 1977! ... grin.gif

Re: Ever missed a deer?

My attitude is, if I didn't get um (grazed, winged, clean miss or whatever) it counts as a miss. With that said, I've missed a few with a rifle, some with a muzzleloader, and some with a bow too (compound and recurve bows). The only type of weapon I've used that I haven't missed with yet is a pistol but I haven't hunted with a pistol too much either and I've only killed one deer and one hog with a pistol.

How many have I missed? I don't know. There's too many years of deer hunting behind me and I try to forget about the misses. It's been about 10 years or so since I missed with a rifle. Wish I could say the same about a muzzleloader and a bow. Good thing they don't cut shirt tails down here for misses with a bow. grin.gif

Re: Ever missed a deer?

I try not to remember.......But I have missed more then i would like to admit. Most misses ave been with a Bow. And boy would I like to have a few of those shots back!!! In time every hunter will miss but as time goes by the misses get fewer and fewer. Don't beat your self up!!! The rest of the world will do that for you.

Re: Ever missed a deer?

I've missed two the first was when I first started hunting and I didn't tighten my scope mount good and the mount loosend up and I didn't notice. The second was this year I think my scope must have gotten bumped and I didn't see it. It was way off and a clean miss.

Re: Ever missed a deer?

I missed the first deer I ever shot at due to 'deer fever'. I was 13 was my first hunt the deer got too close (25 yards) that I couldn't see it through my .243 scope correctly and I was too excited. Grazed the belly fur off it. Aimed too low, jerked the trigger, and was wobbling around alot with my gun.

After that miss I made it a point to never miss another deer again. Learned to calm down and to not take risky shots. I haven't missed since then.

I have killed every deer except one with a single shot. Two have been 200+yard heart shots, and one was 100-yard heart shot.

I only ever shot one of my deer with more than one shot and that was one at 150-yards. I had shot the deer twice due as I took my first shot the deer decided to turn away from me just as I squeezed the trigger off on it. I wasn't 100% sure if the shot was good enough so I put another bullet in it and when my father heard me shoot twice he figured I had wounded it and he shot it a third time. The deer would have died from the first shot as it did hit one lung, but was better safe than sorry.

Re: Ever missed a deer?

I'll do you one better, I missed twice within 30 seconds this year in the second season with rifle. Don't ask, it all happened so quick, I had nine does standing within 100 yds of two of us with a 40 mph wind, cold, cold, cold. I think I just got in a hurry. I do remember that I had a nice broadside target on both does. No blood, trailed for 3/4 mile to make sure. I just flat missed.

Re: Ever missed a deer?

I have missed many many deer and i have only been hunting 10 years. Most of the deer i have missed have been nice bucks too. I have only killed one racked buck and that was a six pointer. The last two years i have filled all three tags that i had. I missed a nice 8pt in 2004 at 40yds with a shotgun (made me sick), couple years ago missed a nice 8 pt at 10 yds with a bow, missed a doe running this year, .........to many to name, but everyone misses

Ever missed a deer?

I have missed deer.

I got out to the stand once, and when I checked the trail camera there had been a nice deer in front of my stand only five minutes before I got there.

As far as shooting….I always hit what I aim at.

I had a nice buck standing in front of a 1” T-type, steel fence post at about 125 yds.. I drilled a hole in that fence post as clean as if I had used a welding torch.

I had a nice doe standing next to a small sapling, and I cut that sapling down in one shot, cleaner than if I had used an ax. (another 125 yd. shot)

I had a squirrel once eating an acorn, and shot that acorn right out of the squirrels grip without touching one hair on the squirrel.

I always hit what I’m aiming at.

That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

I really just need to start aiming at the deer.
