Guest ILclimber
Just curious to see what you guys do for work and how you have the time to go hunting. I know time is very valuable to many people. I am getting ready to graduate College with a Bachelors in Science and just curious to see what you guys do for work and hunting and how it mixes together. johnf
Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting High school band director here. I work pretty late leading up to deer season. I don't get to do much scouting after school starts and I'm pretty much limited to hunting on Saturday, Thanksgiving and Christmas break. I've never shot my limit, but usuallly end up getting at least on deer a year.
rockefeller66
Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting I am in my first year of college and I live 3.5 hours from our land and I drove back home about 4 weekends to bowhunt and 1 weekend for shotgun season! Born2Hunt
Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting I work in an automotive machine shop and I hunt every second I can. I hunt every weekend and almost every night after work. Sometimes only for 30min. but it is the best 30 min.right at dark.
Jimfrompa
Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting I am a capital purchasing agent for a large multi national company. I hunt weekends and after work before daylight savings time comes in. I use several vacation days also. I would be happier if they just gave me off with pay during the season. Is that asking to much? Smitteken
Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting I'm a chemist and work a 4 on 4 off schedule 12 hours a day. Eventhough I'm lucky if I get 2 days off. This year I spent every day off in the woods. At this point I'm really starting to dislike my job, so I've been looking at a career change. Something with normal hours. Then I'll just use my vacation to hunt.
Master_Chief
Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting I am an Information Security Consultant. Right now I am working 4 10 hour days. So that gives me every Friday off. I leave on Thur night, drive 2 hours or so to hunt on Fri and Sat. Not much archery hunting here in Va Beach. Ravin R10 man
Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting I run logging equipment all day..so Im right out there anyways. You shut down and the deer come running..it's like a dinner bell. They know they have fresh tops or leaves to browse on. I also own a farm, so I have food plots plus what I grow helps keep them around. Pretty easy for me to be hunting...it's kinda like this; EAT SLEEP work HUNT REPEAT
Guest Finn
Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting Live in stinkin Chicago and hunt in Northern Wisconsin on my Dad's land, 5.5 hours away. I generally have to take vacation to hunt or when I get a long weekend.
Master_Chief
Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting Finn. Understand your frustration. Nothing worse than being an outdoorsman and being surrounded by concrete. I only have to drive 2 hours or so but 5.5 is tough. Navy brought me to Va Beach 27 years ago and the wife has kept me here since I retired. Good luck.
Tominator
Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting I'm a teacher, and when it comes to hunting, that's good and bad. It's good because I can get out nearly every day and hunt the evenings (if my kids don't have practice that is), but bad because I can't take vacation and go somewhere out west, or even around here. Principals kind of frown on vacation time during the school year.
MUDRUNNER
Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting I'm a sheet metal designer and cnc programmer for a custom trailer company.I generally work 9 or 10 hour days all year long so weekends are about it for me.I save most of my vacation time for the rut and a few days for gun season. Bow Hunter Derek
Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting I own a fabrication/engineering business. Work comes first, but I'm able to set my schedule so that I can generally get out a couple evenings a week during deer season and most every weekend. A very undersanding wife and kids helps too. Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting I'm the IT Director for a Healthcare System (hospital, 2 clinics, 2 nursing homes, EMS). I'm exempt so as long as my work gets done, I can take off about anytime I want. If I want off, I usually ask the CEO if it's OK and he always says "Ask your department head". Well, I'M the department head! Oh, and it get's even better - the CEO is on the same deer lease as me. A lot of the time, he'll walk into my office right after lunch and say "You're fired. Let's go hunting (or fishing)". Pretty cool.

MCH
Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting I'm a "banker". I hunt every weekend and legal holiday plus I get two weeks vacation and 5 personal days a year. We are required to take our two weeks back to back so in case we're embezzling they can catch it easier. I normally take it during the rut if possible. Then the days i don't have school i spend all day in the woods. Also have full time job, but we don't open until 3 during the week so i can hunt any and every morning no matter if i work or not. I save all my vacation and comp days for deer season.
