Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting

I was in maintenance for a school district and I retired last June. I used to hunt a lot years ago but started back again about 3 years ago. shot two deer last two seasons and bought an ML to extent my seasons this year. I will probably also hunt in Wis. at my ex-daugher-in-laws place. Have the freedom to roam now and really enjoy being in outdoors.

Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting

I am in banking, I have 15 vacation days plus paid holidays. This year I was able to take every Friday off in November and December. My hunting club is only 15 minutes from my house. I went on 56 hunts this year (morning/evenings count as seperate hunts). I have a very understanding wife and a long season, one weekend left and then we start preparing for next year.

Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting

I recently graduated with my B.S. in Biology and looking for employment and have gotten nowhere so far. I went to school 2-2 1/2 hours from home and went home every weekend in November, and picked my spots according to weather changes in October, and the had half of December to hunt when school was out.

I pretty much have it made. I work for the family business. ( office manager for Dad's land surveying business) I get off at 2:30 everyday and am usually in my stand by 3:30-4:00 everyday.....unless my child has something going on after school. smirk.gif

Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting

I'm self employed and work out of my house. In most people's eyes I'm semi-retired now and I guess they're right. I have a business partner and we develop and assemble oil and gas exploration prospects. We sell them to industry participants in order to get them drilled and reduce our own risked dollars in our prospects. Along with making money off of the sale of our prospects, we keep an equity stake in all of them. We also purchase small interest in other party's prospects too as part of spreading our risk and maximizing our expose.

With the way our business works along with both of us sharing a passion for deer hunting, we can pretty much take time off whenever we want to provided it doesn't put our invested funds at risk. The slow time of the year for our business is around November 1st through January 15th so we usually don't work very much during that time. Usually my weekday spring turkey hunting is before 9:00 a.m. so I can still get some work in if I need to.

Back in the days when I was a salaried employee for other oil and gas companies I was a weekend hunter just like most other hunters. There were times when I had to work weekends too back then. I never had more than 2 weeks of vacation time when I worked for someone else.

Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting

I'm a photojournalist for a Chicago newspaper. Been there a while so I get 4 weeks vacation, holidays, personal days, and comp time. I'll usualy spend at least 3 weeks out of state for turkey and deer, and the rest of the time near home. Before the time change, I can usually get out most afternoons on a spot near home.

Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting

I work as a robotics tech for a Japanesse company contracted to IBM in Vermont.

12 hour shifts 3 or 4 day per week.

Which gives me 3 or 4 day off per week...!!! shocked.giflaugh.gifcool.gif

No vacation, holiday, or sick time off, but with 3 or 4 days off per week its not to bad. crazy.gifsmirk.gif

It breaks down to me getting at least 1/2 of all the season days off. smile.gif

However some of those days are spent playing Mr. Mom. mad.gifsmirk.gif

Now if I could just gets these kids to grow up a bit so they will be in school full time...... smirk.gifgrin.gifwink.gif

Heh heh heh...

Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting

I'm a mechanic at a GM Dealership, I get every weekend off, and they're pretty good to let me take off a day here and there. I work 8-5 Monday thru Friday, usually in the fall it's pretty dark when 5:00 rolls around. Besides, I hunt about 1 hour from home, 45 minutes from work, so I'm pretty pressed for time during the week.

Re: Occupation and Deer Hunting

I am a IBEW construction Electrician and have been for almost 21 years here in the metro NYC area.

I am currently working in the Ground Zero area of Manhattan. I have been lucky the last 10 years with getting to pick my time off to hunt. We start work real early so that gives me the afternoons easily.

I bowhunt right here in my backyard and have land and another home about an hour away. I hunt and shoot and ride just about EVERY weekend with my 3 sons.

I keep them out of trouble that way. grin.gif
