pauls second trip

Jan.22 we finally got a good rain in North Texas about an inch of slow soaking rain! Paul also came in for his second trip this month,we checked his gun to be sure it was on and hit the woods in the rain.We only had enough time for 2 stands and called nothing!

coyotes are still coming really slow for the most part, but they should fire back up in February.

day 2

First thing of day 2 we called in 3 coyotes that came in hard a fast like they are supposed too.1 caught movement and left ,the second caught movement and zoned in on it running right straight at us,Paul fired several times ,but never connected. We made several more stands and saw one coyote ,but nothing came in.

that evening we called a new place, made several stands ,but nothing came .On the last stand after 30 minutes we decided to move on,just as we stood I saw a coyote standing about 80 yards off just watching us.It was leaving in a hurry Paul fired and connected, but I could never find a good enough blood trail to find it!

day three

We again made several stands and nothing! after calling for almost 20 minutes { mind you we rarely have to call more than 15 when they are coming right} I did a female invitation howl on the FX3 waited a minute and did a coyote in distress .A few minutes later I saw a coyote break a brush line coming our way.she crossed a small valley, came up the fence row and stopped,Paul made a perfect shot and she dropped!

We moved across the road to a new spot and decided to hand call, after the last stand I told Paul we were going to give this one 30 minutes minimum.I used one of jay nistetters "rhino calls" and the "screamin demon" using both rabbit distress and coyote distress sounds. After 30 minutes of nothing I thought I would be a smart aleck and play revalee on the "demon" and stood up.Just as I stood up I saw a coyote out at about 400 yards just looking around,I told Paul stay put and I sat back down ,calling some more she turned our way on a mission.she stopped at about 70 yards and Paul dropped her.

day four

We got off to a bad start I had a spot all picked up for us to call right at day break,just as we were about to set up,when an oil field working decided to drive through our spot and stop and talk loudly on his cell phone forever,but rather than go shoot the guy {which is what I wanted to do} we moved on! {by the way he knew very well we were in there hunting}

We again made several stands before we finally got any action. We sat up along a creek drainage overlooking an old grain field with a couple of clumps of timber in it! As soon as I started the call doves flushed from an area of timber right in front of us,I told Paul that the call didn't flush them to stay alert, then the crows started fussing at something, but nothing came. After what seemed like forever {Paul was nodding off} I switched the Fx3 to coyote in distress then back to Byron South's male jackrabbit,a coyote came running .I said "here he comes" and Paul jerked awake and got on her ,she stopped and he busted her at a little over 100 yards. I just knew it was a male by the size ,but it was a huge female easily over 45 pounds!

We decided to do some night calling that evening. On the first stand we got nothing, but on the second we didn't call very long before I saw two sets of eyes way far off,but before they could get there another critter came in.It looked and acted like a bobcat,But Paul wasn't sure what it was and I wouldn't let him shoot till we had a positive ID. It left and I kept blowing jay's rhino call ,immediately the other two critters popped out ,it was two gray fox Paul shot the first one at about 100 yards and missed the second several times!

we took pictures and moved on ,Paul wanted to kill a coon.On the next stand we called in two coons that came so hard I thought they were fox for a minute.he shot the first one and missed the second.

We moved to another area and called another coon ,but Paul missed.

day five

We slept in and started calling at noon. The wind had gotten up ,but we were going anyway. I told Paul starting out that I had that "cat feeling" going on.On the first stand we called in one nasty looking as well as strange looking coyote, but it never presented a shot.

we made two more stands, but nothing came in.Just as we were moving I spotted an armadillo.Paul said he wanted to shoot one so he did.

On the next stand after a few minutes of calling the crows went nuts, but nothing ever came in and the crows left.I told Paul that I thought we had called a cat ,because a coyote will usually come on in crows or not! I told him we should move just a short ways and call into the same area from a different direction,so we did .I started out using Byron's "swamp" rabbit then switched to the DSG cottontail. I Immediately saw a good looking cat coming. He came in and sat down at about 70 yards and Paul shot him.Now I usually keep calling ,but was worried the cat might get up so I told Paul to get down there quick. When he stood up another cat that we hadn't seen ,between us and the one he shot ran off! I guess she was sneaking in low while I watched the other one.

We decided for some more night calling and called some really good areas ,but got nothing. So we moved to one of my old spots, right away we called in a coyote, but she got our wind before Paul could get a shot. Then we called in a coon ,but Paul's gun didn't fire.

we called in several more coons ,that all eventually went up nearby trees.Paul wanted to try out my wife's 12 Ga. with some hevi shot "dead coyote" and killed 2 more coons One weighed 23 pounds! here's me with pauls coon.

In all we called in 9 coyotes,3 bobcats, 2 fox in five days and several coons.
