Turkey choke for gun

Ok, I've been thinking about investing in a decent choke for my gun for turkey hunting, although I haven't had too much luck the last 2.5 years. I have a Mossberg 500 20ga. and just a full choke for that is I think a Mossberg factory. I may be going to Gander Mountain tomorrow and want to check things out. Can anyone give me some good suggestions as to a good choke to look for? I know some chokes pattern differently but I'd like something that will likely have a good pattern when I use it and not have to buy something else. Are there any chokes out there that any of you use that are consistent? Thanks!

I posted this same question a couple weeks ago and COMP-N-CHOKE was the clear winner. I will be ordering mine very soon. smile.gif

Even though its a favorite, and it is working great in my 835! It may not produce the results you want! Every shotgun is different. Best thing to do is to try different choks to see which will work the best!!!

Are there any chokes that are good that are a little cheaper?

HS STRUT UNDERTAKER

PRIMOS JELLYHEAD

All about $20. I tried them as well, they were ok at best. The Comp-N-Choke worked the best in my Mossberg 835 at 40 yards. At 40 yards, if your planning to shoot a turkey, you might want to try a C-N-C for the extra $35.

IMO...any extended aftermarket choke tube (designed for turkey loads) will perform better than factory.

Second that. It's been my experience that this holds true nearly all if not all the time.

Question is: Do you want a "good" choke or do you want a "great" choke. Very often the difference between the two comes down to $$. Not always. But often.

On the cheap side, the H.S. Undertaker will most likely out-perform your factory tube to some extent.

Re: Turkey choke for gun

Great insite there Strut. I shoot a Win 1300 with a C-N-C and I wanted the best choke on the market possible IMO. I did a lot of reading and studying on chokes before I went with my choice. Not that I'm a great turkey hunter, but with this setup I have killed turkeys from 13yds to 45yds and I have not had 1 get away YET. Yes the C-N-C is more $ than alot of others but I will say it has searved me well. My.02 cents.

Well so far I haven't found a choke that will fit my Mossberg 500 20ga. except for on Cabelas, a Carlson's factory choke tube...go figure...

Hastings also makes very good choke tubes in the $25 - $30 range. The Mossberg/Winchester/Weatherby... will fit your 500 20 gauge.

Here's where you can find some. About 3/4 of the way down the page.

Hastings Chokes for Mossberg/Winchester/Weatherby

My daughter has had very good results with the .566 in her Rem 870(your results may vary). They have them from .562-.574 diameter in the Ext. Turkey chokes there.

Otherwise the Comp n Choke is very good as many others have mentioned already.

Re: Turkey choke for gun

I'm going to a hunting store today and will see if they have the choke and if so, if it is cheaper than ordering it online. I have a box of Federal Turkey #6 shot and some Winchester I think also, but yeah, once I find a choke, I'll see which ammo shoots best. By the way, does anyone know how this choke performs distance wise?

Re: Turkey choke for gun

Best thing for you to do is check that yourself! Start about twenty yards shoot one shot at a turkey target. Go up and count the number of hits in the head and neck. If you have more than five, move back five yards and shoot at another target. Keep doing this until you no longer have five hits in the head area. This will determine your maximum range. Before you do all this you should also find out where your pattern is the fullist. Shoot one shot at a big piece of paper with a 20-30 inch circle on it. Then check out where the shot is hitting the most! So you know where to aim. I had to do this, because when I am ready to shoot, I need to hold my bead on the turkey at the base of his neck at 40 yards. Hope this helps!

Re: Turkey choke for gun

Thanks LifeNRA! That does help. I wonder if that is why 2 years ago, the last time I had a chance at a turkey, a big tom at that, I missed him and just grazed some feathers off him, because I aimed right at his head, not the base of the neck, and he was about 30 yards maybe? I had just a factory full choke in anyway....live and learn:-)

Re: Turkey choke for gun

With the 20 gauge it'll kill a turkey as far as a 12 gauge energy wise. But your dealing with a lot less shot to start with in most cases. So like LifeNRA mentioned you'll have to see how it shoots for you.

As far as which shell has more shot the fedreal have 1 5/16 oz shot where most others have 1 1/4 oz of shot.

Hevishot came out with a 20 gauge 3" hevi-13 load that has a 1 1/2 oz payload which is very close to a 12 gauge load. I may try it in my daughters gun this spring to see if I can turn it into a true 40 yard turkey killing machine.

Re: Turkey choke for gun

Did you try to order off the Hevishot site?

They don't do internet sales and are only selling through retailers. The 1.5 oz 20 gauge loads are new this year so I don't know if anyone has them in stores yet. Also there has to be a typo on their site in the pellet counts. They are showing the same pellet counts in a 1.5 oz as a 1.625 oz load in the same shot sizes. That can't be right.
