Re: YOUTH DAY IDEAS.....PLEASE HELP

What age group are we talking about? older kids will be interested in more advanced challenges than younger. Will the youngins be grouped as whole?

Break it down a little more and I will do some thinking on it.

there is a bunch of things that you can do to get the kids into it...but it depends on what you have to use... i would set up a fishing dermy and take them to the range.... and maybe even the archery range.

Re: YOUTH DAY IDEAS.....PLEASE HELP

If they can only archery hunt untill 16 I would probibly focus on that. Then probibly some shooting derbys with co2 bbguns or maybe even paintball guns. For older kids I might even have some easy clay pigeon shooting with nice wide open chokes and marksmanship contest with 22 single shots.

Re: YOUTH DAY IDEAS.....PLEASE HELP

Dont know other than what has been mentioned other than taking some kids out individually to actually hunt. My kids so far have had a great interest in hunting and the outdoors. My middle daughter wanted to shoot when my oldest started shooting, I think just because she saw her big sister doing it, so I had to cap an empty muzzleloader and let her squeeze the trigger just for her to hear it. This coming year she wants to go with me more. For me taking kids, a box blind in a place where they are likely to see deer really seems to get them excited.

Re: YOUTH DAY IDEAS.....PLEASE HELP

I would ask conservation orgs. and the DNR about coming and setting up a "Station"....I have helped out with youth projects for the last 7 years of my life... I really enjoy it!

Here are a few ideas: Have a dog trainer come in with labs and show them that, trap shooting, archery club came out with some outdoor targets with animals and balloons on them and shoot them with bows. Have them mix a food plot mix in a cup and tell them about that. You can offer trap shooting--shell reloading--set up a place to sign them up for firearm/bow hunters safety through the state/DNR.. put up a treestand and have an adult help them get into it.... put goose decoys out and field lay-out blinds and let them sit in the lay-out blinds. Have a zoo bring some raptors (birds) out to show the kids... have a mock shed hunt with prizes.... Hands on stuff is what usually excited the kids and keeps them interested.

I would maybe have a booklet made and they need a stamp from each station to participate and then once you have all of them completed turn it in for a drawing for a nice price or something ????

There is so much to do! Let us know how you fare...

Re: YOUTH DAY IDEAS.....PLEASE HELP

We have a huge JAKES Day through our local NWTF chapter every year. This is our 7th year and we generally have about 200 kids attend. The event is open to ages from 4 to 17. We have it on our local game preserve (public land). Some have been mentioned, but here are some seminars we’ve done over the years (I’m sure I’ve forgotten some).

- Hunter Safety with certified hunter’s education instructors

- Air Rifles (with hunter’s ed. Instructors)

- 3-D Archery (help from local bowhunting/archery association)

- VA Game Dept. Hunting Simulator

- VA Game Dept. Fishing Simulator

- ATV Safety/Riding (local cycle shop set everything up)

- Turkey calling

- Turkey call making (kids make their own box calls)

- Tree planting (kids actually planted sawtooth oaks with the forestry dept.)

- Indian Artifacts w/ arrowhead making demo

- Casting (help from local BASS club)

- Trapping

- Wildlife Conservation (we are lucky to have a guy in the state who has an excellent

Program, Mike Roberts and Back to Nature

- Falconry demonstration

- Retriever and pointing dog demonstration

- Wild Turkey Cannon net demonstration (very cool)

- Mountain Man demo (local guy shows how they lived/survived and the tools and tactics

they used)

We also have a drawing for a guided spring turkey hunt with a chapter member. Last year we were able to do nine.

The talking and teaching is great and necessary, but the more hands-on/action stuff you can do the better. Good Luck!
