EKYhunter
of the new 28" Encore rifle barrels that are in the Cabela's Spring Shooting catalog? Just curious, thanks.
AJ
Re: AJ What\'s your opinion Which ones are those? I see the standard 24" and 26" barrels but I did not notice any 28" versions. What page?
tped
Re: AJ What\'s your opinion Midsouth also has them advertised on their web. 28" fluted barrels mostly in stainless. I don't think they are available just yet. Pretty decent selection of calibers.
AJ
Re: AJ What\'s your opinion I do like longer barrels, definately so on guns with very short actions, its like free velocity, well other than a little extra weight. But it can also give better balance. I prefer a heavier muzzle as it keeps the crosshairs steadier for offhand shots. It is harder to hold for longer periods of time, but it dampens out the jitters a bit. Another benefit is to move the blast farther away from the shooter. I have 2 guns with 28" barrels and they are on long bolt actions. The only drawback I can see is they are factory barrels. I know there are some that have had good success with them, but I have been burned enough that I won't spend my money on them.

Its was his advice to me when I was in the market for a new encore bbl. Mine was for a handgun though. Since then I have been seriously cruising specialty handgun forums and have gotten simular advice. I'd say its a 60:40 chance you will get a shooter from a factory T/C bbl. Fox Ridge Outfitters has the T/C Custom Shop where you can get a bbl made and the prices are not bad at all but again its a risk I have been told. Minimal but there. If you are looking for a true shooting tack driver you wil need to find a custom bbl maker. OTT, Bullberry, SSK, Virgin Vally (out of business), etc.. They can run some $$$ new, but if you find one used they are affordable. I found a used 15" Encore 7mm08 Bullberry with brake and hanger bar/forend for $290. According to the web site that bbl was well over $550 new. JMO
