pamanagement
I am also trying to figure out what to plant. I will be planting 2 acres that will probably be a warm season plot since it is in the open and I would expect deer not to use much during the day. It is a pasture that is next to horse pastures but deer use at night already. I also will have a couple smaller hunting plots and maybe one other warm season spot. My first question is since they are new plots, should I plant all anuals this year and let the lime kick in, then replant next year. Also, I've been reading that it might be a good idea to spray and till all summer then plant in late augustor early september. I would really like to get something down for the summer. The first spot I talked about I tried to plant last year but the grass regrew and over took the biologic. What should I do.
dogdoc
Re: planting this spring if you want to plant something this spring and still spray look at the roundup ready variety of plants. You could plant a mixture of RR soybeans and RR corn. The soybeans will provide a high quality warm season forage and then in the fall and winter the deer will feed on the corn. You can spray several times during the late spring and summer with roundup without damaging the RR crops. Biologic has a new product that contains both RR beans and RR corn already in a mix. You could mix it a lot cheaper if you want but if you want the convinence of a pre-mix you might take a look at that. As far as hunting plots I like to use cool season grains such as wheat. oats, and ryegrain. good luck todd
bowhtr1
Re: planting this spring Im not sure where you are but if you name inplies PA then you have plenty of deer. I dont know if 2 acres of soybeans is enough to keep the deer from eating it to the dirt. I would try to spray with Roundup and then plant something that will take heavy browsing. I use American joint vetch but I dont know how it would work up there. Lab Lab is another one that will take heavy browsing. I dont know what it would do up there either but I will try lab lab in a small plot this year. You may want to look at another one I am going to try this year. It is sugar beets. I have been looking at a site called bucklunch.com and will try it in a small plot also. Whatever you get try something that will come back after browsing. Soybeans are one of the best plants for the price but you have to have a good size plot. Good luck.

dogdoc
Re: planting this spring [ QUOTE ] What type of equipment is needed to plant the rr beans. Also, what about oats and wheats [/ QUOTE ] I plant my soybeans just like all my big seeds. Disc the ground to make a nice seed bed. Broadcast my fertilizer then broadcast my beans. I'll then lightly redisc the plot to cover the beans. You can bury them up to one inch--I've never had a problem burying the larger seeds like soybeans too deep. After burying them I'll drive over the plot with my tractor or ATV to help pack the soil down to ensure good seed to soil contact. Then (the most important part)--get on your hands and knees and beg the man upstairs for some rain!!!!!!! Wheat and oats are a great cools season annual cereal grain. Both are highly palatable and provide lots of carbs. Wheat will stay green all winter and the oats will die on a good hard freeze. You can also use oats in the spring. They will provide a few months of good forage then go to seed. good luck todd
rockefeller66
Re: planting this spring I find that the best plot mix is chicory, clover, and alfalfa, that is what the deer LOVE up here!!!
Guest 257Roberts
Re: planting this spring Unless you are going to fence it off to prevent browsing the soybeans will probalby be a bust on two acres. you might try some cowpeas. the time i planted it the deer left them alone untill they made beans then they tore em up. Clover or alph-alph is a good choice too. the deer will utilize it year round and you can spray it for week control in the summer.
