I shoot a 20 gauge and was wondering what type accuracy the 20 gauge would produce. I already heard the 12 gauge Buckhammers aren't very accurate due to the slow rifling twist and a heavier 1 1/4 oz slug. The 20 gauge only weighs an oz. AJ can you give me some answers on this subject?

Re: Remington \"Buckhammer\" sabots?

As to which bullet is accurate has nothing to do with the twist. As long as the twist is fast enough to stabilize the bullet (keep it from tumbling) it is fine. The bullet and velocity may not shoot accurate groups, but it not because of the twist. If the bullet is keyholeing as it goes through the target, there is a stabilization problem and twist is not fast enough. What twist a projectile needs is determined by length not weight. Since the Buckhammer slugs have a huge front end and step down to the body diameter, they can weigh more and still be the same length as other saboted bullets. The weight forwards design of the Buckhammer will also assist in stabilization. It will act like a rifled slug.

I can not see Remington marketing a slug that would not stabilize in their barrels. So, whoever gave you that info is off target. I have 4 or 5 boxes of the 12 ga Buckhammer slugs. I have had them for the past 3 years or so but I have not fired one of them.

If you think about it, these slugs have a usefull range of about 125 yards. If they shoot 6" groups at 125 yards, its acceptable. The bullet will still strike within 3" of your point of aim. How these perform in your gun can only be determined by range testing. Get a box and try them. They are not that expensive and additional trigger time is always good.

Thanks, AJ! Point well taken, and I'll go buy a couple of boxes to see how they perform. My shots would be under 75 yards by-the-way. smile.gif

AJ, I bought a couple boxes of Remington Buckhammers 20 ga. this morning. Tested then this afternoon, and found them to be very accurate and on par with the Lightfield Hybrids. Same P.O.I. at 25 yards. And at 50 yards. They should both zero at 75 yards or a little beyond that.
