VTbowman
As you know I just got the Encore 15" ML 209x50. The manual I got from T/C shows a bunch of load data in the back of it. They appearently are pushing Pyrodex, and pellets over powder by the looks of their manual. It recommends two 50g pellets. I know that a bit much in a 15" bbl... LOL (I had to try it... LOL) I also know yur not a big fan of using pellets in your ML pistol. What do you use for powder? Please be specific. Thanks.
VTbowman
Re: Loose Powder ????s for Handgunnr. OK, For safeties sake. Lets just say I know ZERO, zip, Nadda, etc about loose powder. Makes or models... (I have only use two or three Pyrodex 50g pellets in the past)
hangunnr
Re: Loose Powder ????s for Handgunnr. I use 3F T7 in my ML pistol. I use 60gr by volume. I have not tried the Black Mag powder yet. I do intend to burn some of the American Pioneer 3F on my next outing. hangunnr

VTbowman
Re: Loose Powder ????s for Handgunnr. [ QUOTE ] I don't see why you couldn't use pellets? [/ QUOTE ] Well I could, and have, however with a 15" barrel, the pellets do not burn completely before the sabot leaves the barrel and you can get almost 1/3 to 1/4 of a pellet outside the barrel still burning. This could be dangerous out in the field. Loose powder can be measured to a lesser charge to maximize in barrel burning. I did think of trying the 30g pellets and going to a 60g to 90g charge, or 80g if I use a 50g and 30g pellet combo, but still, loose powder is great for really dialing in that load developement. I just do not know anything about the different loose powders on the market.
Guest TCScout
Re: Loose Powder ????s for Handgunnr. I prefer the loose powder. Although you need to do your own testing I would utilize some of the advice given by Handgunnr, given that he has that gun and has been shooting it a while. My motto is be safe and ask more questions if you have any doubts. I like the 3F in pistols. Bear in mind you need to back down on the volume you would normally use of 2F because 3F is finer and with the added surface area creates greater pressure than the coarser grained 2F. Its fast buring as well.

AJ
Re: Loose Powder ????s for Handgunnr. I am using 80 gr of 3f Triple 7 with a 235 gr QT40 in my Encore handgun. I have not chronoed the load so I don't know the efficiency of the higher powder charge. I do know it shoots good though.

Are they really that good? Compared to the Shockwaves? Thanks.
AJ
Re: Loose Powder ????s for Handgunnr. They QT40 bullets are extremely accurate. Since they are pure lead, they don't have much choice but to expand. There is no copper jacket to impede their performance. Like I have said in other posts, deer are not bullet proof. Since we are shooting even lower velocities with handguns, a pure lead bullet just makes sence to me. The Dead Centers are also very good bullets. I like the SST and Shockwave bullets. I shoot them in my smokeless ML gun. But its a lot higher velocity and the bullet needs to hold together.
Guest Bob_D
Re: Loose Powder ????s for Handgunnr. Do you go out of your way to make things more difficult then they need to be? Just drop 2 50gr pellets and a Barnes sabot in and shoot the darn thing. It's not like you are going to draw a permit and have a chance to take a shot anyway. How did that red dot work for you? I'd ask you in person, but you sneak out of work too early.

[/ QUOTE ] For one, two 50g pellets dont burn all the way before they leave the bbl and I dont need to be burnin' down OUR huntin spots, dont you think? LOL I may try some 30g pellets and try a few combos with a 50g pellet. I figured a 60g, 80g and 90g set up should get results. 100g is just to much for the shorter bbl IMO. Not recoil wise just fire ball-wise.... Your right about a permit. If I do draw one then we ALL might as well not even go since there will be zero doe to shoot at. Thats always the way. LOL 3rd-I never sneak out of work. I stroll right out the front door before its time to leave, then sit in my truck VS waiting in the clean room for the turn over. D-uh!
