The .223 and 22-250 are probably your more common varmint/predator calibers out there. Next in lline would be the .243 in my opinion. The .243 is a little more versatile and can be used for deer, hogs and varmints. You can find ammo for all three calibers pretty easy. The .204 is getting alot of rave right now and is a good flat long shooting caliber, BUT shot placement is alot more critical in my opinion. Good Luck and let us know what you end up with.

.204 is the fastest factory cartridge on the market, exceeding 4000 fps. Pretty dang flat shooting!!! shocked.gif

[/ QUOTE ]yes, but ammo costs a lot. I'd go w/ the .22-250

i have a 250 but i can cut the cost big time by reloading and get better accuracy.

the 204 is flatter than the 250 by about 4-5 inches ant 300yds.

Unfortunately you are comparing apples and oranges...

if you compare factory to factory the 204 is slightly flatter and faster but much more expensive than the 22-250.

Not sure what you are comparing to get the 4-5 inch difference but, the Remington balistics tables list the 22-250 with a 50 grain acutip bullet only 1.2 inches lower at 300 yards than the 204 with a 40 grain acutip. blush.gif

If you then switch to reloading ammo to get the 204 ammo cheaper and more inline with 22-250 factory ammo cost, then you are no longer comparing the same concept, you should compare the reloaded 204 rounds to reloaded 22-250 rounds...

When reloading the 22-250 actualy gains a balistic edge over the 204.

You can actualy exceed the 204's 32 grain bullet speeds in a 22-250 with 40 grain bullets.

per Hodgdon:

you can load a 204 with a 32 grain Hornady Vmax to 4047 Fps

while you can load a 22-250 with a 40 grain Nosler BT to 4114 Fps

given the similar BC of those bullets you would expect very similar trajectories and a much higher energy retained in the 22-250 round.

Both will, of course, improve in accuracy with load development and the most accurate of each will not likely be much different, given equivelent rifles.

Once again comparing price, reloaded 22-250 will be much cheaper than reloaded 204, primarily to due to the nearly double cost of 204 component bullets when compared to 223 component bullets. On top of that, the 22-250 has a much greater variety of available bullet styles and weights, including military surpluss FMJ BT 223 bullets that allow dirt cheap plinking with the 22-250, while retaining the trajectory balistics of the premium bullets, a concept that cannot be currently matched by the 204's premium bullet only selection.

As to someone elses asertion that the 204 is better since you can keep the scope on target to watch the round hit, recoil is purely a factor of velocity and weight of the bullet coupled with the weight of the rifle, the 22-250 and 204 are not so different in that area and given simmilar gun weight, I highly doubt the 22-250 loaded with 40 grain rounds will pull anyone who can hold a 204 on target, unless they flich on their own.

The 204 is no doubt a fun round but it is hardly a better one than other current varmint calibers on the market when taken in its totality.
