Re: Any Turkey Gobble tube \"EXPERTS\" Out There?

Are you talikng about a gobble shaker like the quaker boy or a tube call which can make a gobble or hen calls? The gobble shaker can be very good for locating birds when they are tight lipped and can even call aggressive dominant birds in. I've killed a couple birds in the past that would only answer the gobble shaker and closed the distance pretty fast. You must be careful not to call in some hunters as well. Be careful using the on public ground.

The tube call like the Primos or Knight and Hale is another good call to have in your vest as not many people use them and the birds aren't accustomed to hearing them. They make great cuts and also make a pretty good gobble with practice.

I killed a bird with the aid of a primos gobble tube last year. They work! Ain't got enough experience with 'em to give advice though.

Do have a funny story using a Red Wolfe gobble tube back in the late eightys.

Had a tom just hollerin' across a small swamp. I had hens a plenty right over me. I figured I could make him jealous by gobblin' at him.

We went back and forth gobblin at each other for at least 45 minutes. Got good and daylite and I hear a "Putt Putt". I look up and there's a jake right smack dab over me. 'Bout that same time, whoom whoom, wings flappin' and red heads sailin' right over the swamp. Turned out to be two jakes that landed dang near in my lap. Unfortunately, the tom didn't oblige me that day.

Got him the next though. smirk.gif

Just take it and give 'er a try. Might wanna try to duplicate the jake gobble at first.

Good luck wink.gif

Re: Any Turkey Gobble tube \"EXPERTS\" Out There?

I've never been able to make a latex type tube call sound like a decent gobble. I've tried but I just can't make a good consistent gobble using one. As a result I opted to go with a shaker type call a long time ago. The only one I've used that really sounded like a gobble to me was the Primos Gobbler. It's also the only shaker call I've tricked birds with too. I always carry one in my turkey vest. You know by listening to a real bird gobbling, a gobble sort of breaks over to a lower tone through the length of a bird's gobble. I can reproduce this sound with the Primos call by slowly closing the end of my hand about half way through the calling sequence. I never close it completely though.

If there's a certain time or situation to use a gobble call, I can't say when it is. I've had them work on lone gobblers, 2 or more gobblers traveling together, and getting between gobblers that for some reason wanted to move toward each other. Every gobbler is a bit different and may or may not respond to a gobble call on a given day. I've had success using them here at home and out of state but I can't say just when they are going to work. Just like any other call, sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. I always try to work a bird with hen calls first and if that doesn't get the bird responding to me, sometimes I'll try a gobble call and sometimes I won't. It's just how I might feel about using it on a particular day along with how that particular bird has acted while I was trying to work him. I will only consider using a gobble call on private property for obvious safety reasons.

BTW, I was in Texas hunting Rios one season and gobbled a bird in. It was a guided hunt so I had a guide with me but I always tell my guide he doesn't need to take any calls. Anyway, he had never seen a bird tricked by using a gobble call so after being repeatedly asked about the call I gave him my gobble call right before I left. My new replacement call has worked just as good as the one I gave away so I don't think there's any particular Primos Gobbler call that's any better than the next one.
