Re: Biggest Looser Competition!!!!!

Ok gang, here is the deal. I thought about this competition after reading and signing up for it. I contacted Alex on a few things and asked him about them. He told me to spell it out in here and we can all agree (or at least the majority).

Weight is a hard factor to be fair on. A guy in his 30’s will have 10 times the trouble losing 15lbs versus a guy in his 20’s. You metabolism simply slows to a crawl at a certain stage in his life. Also thinking of the gender line, women lose weight much slower (typically) then men. That would also be an unfair advantage.

My suggestion was to show height, age, and weight. He told me to keep it simple and I agree. All of these factors are based on the honor system. The end result would be judged more on Overall transformation then weight (considering the three factors stated above). To me this would be a very fair way of proceeding.

Honestly, Until about 2-years ago, I could skip a couple of lunches a week and drop 15lbs in no time. Now that I’m pushing 30 that’s next to impossible, I have to step up the cardio and I know I can still lose easier then some of the older participants (and there in lies the problem).

Also the pic is for visualization only. It would judge the end result, however, I personally would like to see pics that offer more detail on weight. Fully clothed, of course, but a t-shirt will offer much more detail then a jacket and such. For the heck of it id suggest some signal to confirm that the pics are current (as in the Predator forum) such as a thumbs up.

It all seems fair to me but then again I could be considered picky. I just would like to see the playing field leveled for everyone. What do you think and be honest….

If this sounds good I suggest we start a thread later and have a mod pin it for sign up. It of course would include all of the information posted above…..

Re: Biggest Looser Competition!!!!!

Jeramie,

I see what your saying but I don't see how it's going to be rated. I'm 35, 5'10" and 190#'s. I know that the factors you listed do have an effect on weight lose but I don't know the science behind it or what type of formula we would have to come up with to make it "fair". I'm just going to do it as something else to do to push me to lose a little weight. I'm all for just keeping it simple and going with the % lost as I don't see how all the other factors are going to equal out to an even playing field.

I would get on the internet and find the average decline in the metabolism for certain age groups. From there you could desern a margin of error. Height would and can probably be considered opinion. So people could just reference height to weight ratio to get a picture of how much the weight has transformed the person.

It sounds complicated but its honestly not. All anyone in the compition would have to do is list a few things and start their cardio programs. I would try to get a formula put together soon thereafter. In the end it would be just like the tv show, "The biggest loser." They use % in there too.

Actually figuring fat loss isnt that hard. Look up BMI (Body mass index). It will tell you how much body fat you are carrying in %. It uses height, age, and weight.

Say im carrying 30% right now by the formula. All you have to do in 6-weeks or so is punch in (add in) the new variables and poof... You have a new BMI. If my body fat has dropped 6% in 6-weeks thats easy to guage...

Just a thought....

Re: Biggest Looser Competition!!!!!

Here is a simple guideline I got off the net in about 2-seconds..

Body Type Female Male

Athlete 17% 10%

Lean 17-22% 10-15%

Normal 22-25% 15-18%

Above Average 25-29% 18-20%

Overfat 29-35% 20-25%

Obese 35+% 25+%

The American Council of Exercise provides the following:-

General Body Fat Percentage Categories

Classification Women (% fat) Men (% fat)

Essential Fat 10-12% 2-4%

Athletes 14-20% 6-13%

Fitness 21-24% 14-17%

Acceptable 25-31% 18-25%

Obese 32% plus 25% plus

Jeramie,

The BMI thing looks easy enough, now just show us how that combines with the age thing and see if everyone agrees on it.

Give me a little bit. I know there is a chart on the net with BMI to age ratios. Ill see if I can find it.

Also, We probably should set a start date....

Re: Biggest Looser Competition!!!!!

Thats my whole point fingers. Im pushing 30 but I skipped lunch yesterday and ate a light dinner. I stepped on the scale this morning and I was 197. I was 201 yesterday.... 4lbs in 24 hours. Seriously.

I will plateau but for the first couple of weeks I should shed (and keep off) 10+lbs quickly. Especially if I start running 2-miles every morning again.

Ill look for some sort of chart or % about mid to late morning gang. Hopefully I can come up with a number soon....
