Gator
Re: Do you filet fish alive? Yup, unless it's catfish, then we hang'em, cut their tails and let'em bleed.

Shaun_300
Re: Do you filet fish alive? Yep, usually when I bring them in they're still alive. If it's cold in the winter, like -20 or -30, they're usually frozen as stiff as a board when I bring them in, gotta let them thaw out for a couple hours.... Like this one.... magnatecsteve
Re: Do you filet fish alive? I usually do up the dead uns' first...just to give them a chance to expire on their own...but yes, alive.
tp793
Re: Do you filet fish alive? maybe a dumb question....but why do you do it alive? are there advantages, disadvantages as oppose to letting them die? Just curious, I always let them die and havn't ever heard of people doing them up while they are alive...but I guess I'm not a hardcore fisher, so I wouldn't know.. [/ QUOTE ] I don't believe there's any advantages or disadvantages of cleaning them dead or alive. For me, if they happen to still be alive when I fillet them, I don't kill them before hand. HitRmisS
Re: Do you filet fish alive? i do if they are still alive but personally i would rather have my head cutt off and die quickly rather than slowly die due to suffocation
Guest Andrea
Re: Do you filet fish alive? NO. I always throw them in a cooler of ice and let them "go to sleep" first. Can't stand to clean a live fish. There's no sense in it.
WABS
Re: Do you filet fish alive? Much easier to clean a fish that isn't flopping around. I've also used the "putting them on ice" technique and it works well. If I do fillet a fish that is alive I will cut through its backbone on my first cut. HuntingInMaine
Re: Do you filet fish alive? I filet them after they are dead...in Maine we can only gut the fish while at your fishing spot. Big trouble if you get caught just carrying a bag of filets! You'd have to also bring the fish bodies to prove none of them were too short. We snap the "neck" on the ones we are going to keep so they don't suffer. It just seems mean to filet them while they are still alive....

LifeNRA
Re: Do you filet fish alive? I had some crappies one time, still alive when I brought them home. Not very fun to clean once you have two sides off and they still flop around the sink! What a mess! Now, one sharp blow on top of the head, they stop moving! Palssonater
Re: Do you filet fish alive? I will most likely smack them with the but end of the knife, till they do their deathy shimmy and then I fillet.
dogdoc
Re: Do you filet fish alive? when I go striper fishing they are usually dead by the time we get back to the cleaning station but for the ones that are still alive---they aren't for long!
