Re: a few cherry slate over glass calls

Beautiful! Please tell me how one chooses the combination/configuration of the material--I have heard of slate over glass, glass over slate, double glass, single glass, aluminum, other combinations I presume exist. I know each combination will have a different tone, but are there general rules of thumb.

Thanks

The combo depends largely on what the buyer wants as far as tone, rasp, roll over, and general performance....All the materails play a part in the call...for instance...a glass/glass call will be more sharp and crip than a glass/slate....a general rule of thumb is the harder the surface materal and the harder the sound board the higher the pitch/tone and again...just the opposite. call design has a lot to do with the way a call will sound....thus the reason a lot of custom call makers have a set of numbers that they make their calls from...these numbers come from hours of mistakes and lots of pretty fire wood...LOL...I have turned calls for some folks that I found hard to part with...and when that happens....I measure the entire call...inside, out side, depth, distances of sound board to surface, distance of sound board to bottom of call...rim thickness, pedistal thickness, and bottom thickness....I am no C-N-C machine but I try to be close...LOL
