Bow Hunter Derek
Anyone here have any experience chasing birds in the Black Hills area of S.D.? I had a Texas trip fall through because of work conflicts, so I want to chase Merriams as a fall back plan (oh darn ). Anyway, the Black Hills as had some magical appeal to me for some time. I'm looking to make a full week or more of it near the end of their season. My goal is to avoid the mass crowds of hunters and have more predictable weather from that in the earlier part of the season. Any suggestions or input? Looking for a good area. I'm thinking of camping, but a hotel is not out of the question (or a mix of the two). Thanks for any input!
jbeck
Re: Black Hills area turkeys Contact Fish and wildlife parks, they can give you maps on BLM ground. Biggest thing with Meriums is they'll come a long way if they want to. GL
Bow Hunter Derek
Re: Black Hills area turkeys Done that, but thanks. Also looking at eastern Wyoming or N.W. Nebraska. I really want to chase a Merriam, but do not want to pay $1,000 to a guide. Looking for a do it yourself type of hunt. Hopefully a tip on an area that does not have a hunter behind every tree, yet there are some birds to hunt too. Any input would be great! waterfowler_gal
Re: Black Hills area turkeys I gave you the low-down... Check with Borch, he's the man! It is a totally do-it-yourself hunt with all the public land and the unbelieveable scenery is well worth it. The elk migrate to the lower elevations and there is antelope, deer (muley/wt), mountain lions, TURKEYS of course...you name it! $85 for non-resi tag... lots of land....
