danthehunter
I see that a few of you guys have the red dot scope for your turkey gun and i was thinking about buying one this year. But before i do i want hear what everyone thinks of them?
jbeck
Re: Red Dot\'s? They are great, doesn't matter what position your in, put the dot on and go. I practiced with mine shooting clay birds, really helps with picking up moveing targets. GL
Rhino
Re: Red Dot\'s? I put a holosight on my turkey gun the first year Bushnell came out with them. I don't recall now just how many years ago that was. I do remember during the 4 years prior to doing it, I missed 5 gobblers. I still killed my share but those misses were, to say the least getting me real upset. Since putting the holosight on my shotgun, I've missed 1 gobbler due to operator error (I pulled to the left at the moment of truth). I don't care if it's a red dot, holosight, turkey scope, or whatever; anything that improves your view of the aiming point over and above the old bead sight, the better. The best thing about a red dot, holosight sight, or scope is picking a point to aim at and still see (at least) the entire head and neck of the turkey. I prefer the holosight because of unlimited eye relief and it has a larger sight picture than a red dot. The downside is it's more than double the price of a red dot. vagobbln
Re: Red Dot\'s? I switched two years ago and have been very satisfied. I put a Bushnell Trophy Red Dot on my gun. Couple things I liked about that particular scope. It has a lower profile on the gun so it doesn't get knocked around so bad walking through the woods. It has multiple reticles to choose from. I like the circle with the dot in the middle. It's easier for me to pick up (rather than a single small dot), especially under really bright conditions. I was concerned about was the red lens spooking birds. This scope also has a extended lens hood I use. It helps hide the flare from the objective lens so spooking hasn't been a problem. My other concern was target aquisition on a follow-up shot. I'm 6 for 6 with the scope so I haven't been able to practice any follow-ups! Lastly, one of the other fears has always been the batteries. I change it out before the season, whether it needs it or not, and carry a spare in my vest. Hasn't been a problem. In other words, RED DOT ON THE HEAD - TURKEY DEAD. So far. Good luck. Covehnter
Re: Red Dot\'s? I tried out a red dot scope 2 years ago and didnt like it at all. If you are going to put a red dot on you shotgun, be sure to go with a quality optic or the holosight mentioned above, i went the route of a cheaper scope and it cost me a bird. With the cheaper scope i was unable to pick up limbs, trees, brush, etc. that was b/t the turkey and i, i now charge this to the cheaper scope. You've heard the pros here are some of the cons i came up with in my experience. -the batteries like already mentioned. . . just something else to remember. You can pack extra but if you plop down on a bird up close and go to turn the dot on and it's dead. You gotta stop and change batteries. - turning on the scope. . . here again another thing to remember when all you're thinking about is where is that red head popping up? -Dot brightness adjustment, you have different setting to adjust the dot for the brightness of the day, if you dont have it right. . . it causes a bad blur. -A scope on a gun that if you are anything like me gets drug all over the world and knocked and banged of trees from here to there, again just something else to worry about. My alternative is adjustable fiber optic sights. This way i can adjust my point of impact to match my point of aim to assure that i've got the center of my pattern where it needs to be. And, i dont have all the worries mentioned above. I'm not bashing the reddots or scopes of any kind, just saying they're not for me and telling you why. . . so you'll have opinions from both sides of the fence. Good Luck with whichever route you decide to go!
magnatecsteve
Re: Red Dot\'s? I have went from single blade fiber optic beads, to the HI Viz Tri-Viz...wasn't too bad... to a red dot. I might as well take it to the shop and weld it on my barrel, cause' it's not coming off!! (just kidding about welding it) But really, they are THAT nice!! WVreddot870
Re: Red Dot\'s? I've got an older tasco pp4---42 m lens. It's been on my shotgun and will never come off!!!!! I put red dot scopes on my kids guns. Best thing you can do for a kids gun. They've been shooting squirrels since they've been 6 yrs old.
