JKAPP01
Hey everyone, I am deciding on a new rifle to buy....i have narrowed it down between either a 7mm or 300 mag......regardless i am going to buy a browning......i want something i can use for deer....elk.....and possibly moose someday....my grandpa shot his 65 inch moose with a 300 mag 200gr bullets and only needed 2 shots.....does anyone have any input on either choice....they have just about the same balistics, the 300 is a little more flat at further distances....or maybe i should be looking at those caliber choices in a WSM?? KirkV
Re: New Rifle Suggestions.... I talked to my local gun store the other day and he told me that it was a good thing that I bought the 300 win mag over the short mag, because they are starting to see some "loosening" problems with the short mags. JKAPP01
Re: New Rifle Suggestions.... yah, i have heard that some are experiencing overheating of the barrel since the powder burns so much faster........but i can't imagine that being a problem unless you are shooting box after box of shells....a few shells here and a few there can't hurt...but i still think i am going with the .300 win mag....thanks for your input! unioncountyslayer
Re: New Rifle Suggestions.... I have been shooting a Browning A-Bolt 7MAG for about 8 years. It is a great rifle and havn't even thought about replacing it with anything else. It is flatter shooting than what most people told me before I bought it. I can hold dead on target at 300 yards with no drop.
Guest Colorado Bob
Re: New Rifle Suggestions.... I think the main reason for a Mag is to shoot big bullets fast. of those 2--- I would opt for the 300 Wing Mag. I like the 30 caliber---plus it sounds like part of yuor family likes it already. I would also take the 300 Win Mag over the 300 WSM. I think the orginal is also better.
Shaun_300
Re: New Rifle Suggestions.... I personally own a .300 Win Mag (Remington 700) and a .300 WSM (Browning BLR). Both cartridges are great. I prefer the WSM, the shells are more convienient to carry, less recoil, less noise. The shells are almost $5-$10 a box more expensive than the Win Mag though. That's my only complaint with the WSM cartridge.
JKAPP01
Re: New Rifle Suggestions.... union county, what grain bullets are you shooting that you can hold dead on at 300 and have no drop........?????? from the research that i have done.....sight in at 25 and you will be dead on at 200 and a hair high at 100 and a hair low at 300 and about 6.5 inches low with the 300 mag or 7mm mag at 400 yards from the balistics that i have looked at......thinking i am going to go with the .300 now i need to look at the specs on the mag and wsm.....going with a browning bar long trac.....with the mossy oak camo, i won't need to buy another rifle in my life

He means maximum point blank range where you can hold center mass and be on out to 300 yards which is achievable with the 300 Win Mag also. Of course the bullet drops it drops at the same rate all bullets drop. 2. Gravity is different in North Carolina. I am betting its the first one. And by dead on target with no drop means, when I have a deer step out at 300 yards, I put the crosshairs on the shoulder and let it fly. I don't have to compinsate (sp?) for drop at 300. rossman
Re: New Rifle Suggestions.... I have a .300 weatherby mag., it shoots flat. If your sighted in for 300 yards, I only get a 25 inch drop at 500 yards. I killed my elk at 320 yards with a 165 grain spire point. He took one step and dropped. I use my weatherby .300 with my 165 grain spire point for deer and very large game like elk. It would work great for moose too. Everyone says you need a heavy bullet for elk, but this is not true. My father shot his with a 130 grain weatherby .270. That elk didn't even take a step, he just dropped in his tracks. As for a gun to use out west. Make sure you get a round that is very easy to find in all stores across the US. It would be too bad to forget our ammo and not be able to find it elsewhere. Either way, get what you are comfortable with. --rossman

LETMGROW
Re: New Rifle Suggestions.... Most videos I have seen of moose hunts, the darn things are 50 or less yards away. Do you really need a hand cannon?
AJ
Re: New Rifle Suggestions.... I guess that's in the event you need to shoot across the lake at a moose. About the only real justification I can give is moose tend to live in the same habitat as the big brown and grizzly bears. If something happens, more is not less in that instance. Granted the chances are extremely slim, but you never know. I would probably be toting my .338 Win Mag for a moose hunt.
