Re: Turkey..smart or stupid?

Stupid. VERY stupid.

But..........they are afraid of everything, curious of nothing, have terrific sensory perception, and most legal methods of taking a gobbler in the spring go contrary to what the bird's nature would have him do. We, as hunters, like to think of them as "smart" so we don't feel so bad about getting whipped by a critter whose brain is the size of a marble.

Dumb as a pole!

But great instincts for survival. They are paraniod to no end. With hunting pressure they are even more paranoid. Those eyes and ears. Man can they see and hear. Good thing they can't smell anything worth a hoot. Like the saying goes. "If a turkey could smell we wouldn't know they existed."

But when a plan comes together it just seems easy.

I hunt the eastern turkey and I will tell you one thing; They have very good sight. I have had hens, jakes, and toms so close that they notice when I blink my eyes, and I'm not kiddin'. Wether the are dumb or smart, they're sure a thrill to hunt.
