20 ga. turkey shells

I just bought a 20 ga. shotgun for bird hunting and I will be using it for turkey hunting too. I was just wondering what everyone would recommend for shells that pack enough punch for a turkey in a 20 ga.

Re: 20 ga. turkey shells

I just got an 870 express for my son and the only loads I can find are Winchester Supreme, 3 inch, #5s and Remington, 3 inch, #6s. The Winchesters pattern good out to 30 yrds but fall off at 40. Haven't patterned the Rem. 6s yet gut they will probably do a little better at 30.

I figure 30yrds is going to be the max with a 20ga.

I personally wouldn't go any bigger in shot size than #5s, there aren't enough pellets in a 20ga shell to pattern well past 20-25 yrds.(IMO)

Re: 20 ga. turkey shells

The 20 gauge wil thump dead out to 40 yards and beyond if you find a choke/ammo combo that'll pattern that far. Velocity is about the same as a 12 gauge. Just a lot less shot to hold a pattern.

My daughters had excellent results with Federal #6 shot and the hasting .566 turkey choke.

Re: 20 ga. turkey shells

I smoked a gobbler last year with 5s out of my 20 gauge. Look for Federal flight control shot. That will give you and even tighter patern with a good turkey choke.

Re: 20 ga. turkey shells

As much as I have tried to avoid the Hevi-Shot bandwagon............ it seems to be the stuff for making turkey-smashers out of 20 gauges. If your setup is Hevi-Shot safe, I'd give it a try. Other than that, I'd try as many 3" #6 turkey loads through a good turkey choke as I could. I'd recommend a Comp-N-Choke XXX-full tube for the lead shot but not for the Hevi.

Thanks for all the replies. From here I have a lot of choices to try out. So when Turkey season gets nearer, it looks like I will be having fun with my gun.

Re: 20 ga. turkey shells

The best advice I can give , would be to get a Good quality choke for the gun. Something you need to decide is what kind of shells you plan on shooting/hunting with this gun.

After a great amount of testing with a 20 ga, Hevi shot is the way to go in the 20 for that extra range most are after. Don't scrimp on a choke and then find a shell that will perform for the choke you decided on.

My 20 guage turkey gun is now shooting well , but I'm still testing shells. The best I have got with my setup is 173 shot pellets in a 10 circle at 40 yards. This was done with a Precision choke and Nitro shells. The best choke that I used with copper loads was a Rhino choke. Pellet numbers did not match the Hevi loads but with Winchester #5 would have worked great for 35 yard shots max.

I just picked up a box of Hevi 13 #6 for this gun to test and am interested in how they work with my setup....BT

Re: 20 ga. turkey shells

We finally got out ot pattern the Rem. #6, turkey loads. These loads will kill a turkey out to 40yrds.

I was really suprized how well they patterned at 40, we had atleast 25 pellet in a 10inch circle and the holes averaged about 2 inches apart.

We are shooting a Rem. 870 express 20ga., with a Rem. superfull turkey choke.

Good luck finding a choke/load combo!!!!

Why have you avoided Hevi®Shot®? Price?

For the most part.......yes. I don't see a need to spend over $2 a round to do the same job I can get done at less than $1 per round.

Re: 20 ga. turkey shells

I am looking into the HeviShot for turkeys and Hevi 13 but I can't seem to find any online that is available in 20 ga. I can only find it in 12 ga. but I know they are produced in 20 ga. because I was looking at them on their website. Does anyone know where I might be able to find some?
