I found thins on AT, and it is one of the best, in depth posts I have ever read on Under Armour gear. I know alot of us, me included are interested in this product.

Here it go!

I started to post this under the bowhunting forum, but I reconsidered knowing that some heere such as AKdoug and Hollowpoint10 shoot outdoors year round.

I also waited until now (we finally got some cool weather in Virginia) to post the review.

I would like to begin by saying that I'm in no way associated with the Under Armour Corporation, but that would be neat if I can pull it off.

I purchased two heat gear and cold gear suits over the summer. I have a close friend in law enforcement that convinced me that I should give this stuff a try. Under Armour has been available and marketed to law enforcement and military personnel for some time now, and like all successful products, it has now spilled over into the outdoor industry.

For years I've worn polypropylene as a base layer in cold weather to wick moisture away from my skin to aid in keeping warm. And those of you who know me, I need all the help I can get My anatomy consists of about .3% body fat......

I started the year off with the early bow season wearing the heat gear T-Shirt, which is loose fitting. I found it to be very effective as a base layer, keeping me cooler in warm weather. It's not uncommon for temps to reach the upper 70's when our bow season opens. The heat gear T feels very similar to silk on your skin, and passes moisture straight to your outer layers (in my case, a standard T-shirt is worn over the Under Armour and then Scent-Blocker over that). It does not feel "scratchy" as some forms of polypropylene can.

But the real test is the cool / cold weather. Last week, our temps finally dropped into the 20's (just in time for the rut). I got up and donned the cold gear mock turtleneck. Wow, this feels like a second skin. Almost uncomfortable for a minute. Especially if you're not used to tight fitting apparel. I found this garment to feel similar to wearing a paper thin wetsuit. But after a few seconds, it forms to your features and becomes un-noticeable. I then pulled on the cold gear pants, and quickly removed them. (Didn't like that much crowding of the "meat and taters" ) Besides, I didn't want to be arrested for smuggling olives so they went back into the scent proof bag........

The cold gear mock turtleneck worked absolutely beautifully. I have about a 50 minute uphill trek to my stand location, and sweating profusely is common. The terrain is very steep and rocky. Upon arrival, I finish dressing and make my way uphill for the last few yards and climb in. The Under Armour passed every bit of sweat to my outer layers and for once, I never got cold.

I've also found that the Under Armour makes a great wind barrier as well. I'm a big fan of fleece for cold weather due to it's light weight vs. warmth, but those of you who use fleece know that wind will cut right through it. But the Under Armour kept the sting out of the north wind as well.

Under Armour is pretty pricey, but worth every penney for the serious outdoor archer / bowhunter. Thought it might help those who are doubting that it's worth the price.

It's currently offered in Cabela's, as well as many of your local gear shops.

Good luck and good shooting.

Re: Under Armour Test

I broke down and bought some about 2 weeks ago, I also didn't like the idea of spending $100 for underwear, but so far I'm glad I did. I haven't worn it in extremely cold weather yet, but it does wick away the sweat and keeps you warm in 30 degree weather. It should get much colder here during rifle season...I'll give more reviews then. So far, I'm glad I spent the money! wink.gif

Re: Under Armour Test

I have been wearing the military polyprop long underwear for years now. Much thicker and less snug but works on the same principles. Oh and way cheaper at your local Army/Navy store.

Sorry but $100 for underwear? Not me.

$40 was a bit high but the polyprop long johns are the way to go. JMO

Re: Under Armour Test

Then this stuff must be a furnace!

The stuff I have been wearing kills me if its warmer then 20*F. Its REAL thick and when worn as the very first layer I have a hard time believeing its any "looser" then underarmor with 4 to 5 layers on tops of it.

The thing about it is I know it does wick away sweat, but probably causes a bunch too. LOL

Its that warm.

I know the US military would not be using it as "Extreme Cold Weather" gear if it was not suited for such a task.

Again JMO and I have not tried Under Armor so can't really compare them and be fair.

Price-wise there is no comparison and for what the Army/Navy can sell you its a dang good price for really cold weather hunting.

That is true...I honestly never thought I'd buy a pair of Under Armour just for that reason. The wife gave me the ok when we were at Cabelas! grin.gif The poly prop is snug...but the Under Armour almost needs another person to help get on and off. shocked.gifgrin.gif Its very stretchy (is that a word?) and wicks much better than anything I've worn in the past.

The price of this stuff will drop when sales slim down. Price is always a factor when buying things and anyone who knows me...knows I like to save a buck. Sometimes (not always) you get what you pay for, and so far, the Under Armour seems to be worth the money!
