PAbowhunter86
I read in Deer and Deer Hunting an interesting article. Who takes the biggest bucks, Bow-hunters or Gun-Hunters? Well Bow-Hunters have some advanages like they get the first crack at the deer and also most of the time they get to hunt the rut, but because Gun-Hunters have the advacage to shot longer ranges they won. Over all this article said if you want to get a nice buck then you should hunt both seasons.

Bond
Re: Interesting Article!!! If bow hunters shoot bigger bucks, why would the minimum score for pope and young be 125 while boone and crocket is 180?(not sure somewhere from 170-190) I think that's a good indication right there. But I do agree, if you want a big buck, hunt as long as possible. I.E. both bow and gun seasons.

rockefeller66
Re: Interesting Article!!! here in IA I really could care less to gun hunt unless it is the late season muzzleloader. I just like the bow hunting cause you are on your own hunting the rut and there aren't millions of people pushing the chasing the deer all over the country. The is why the only gun season I like to hunt in IA is Late Muzzleloader. You can sit and not have millions of people pushing and driving the deer around the country. Also you don't have to worry about as many road hunters driving around and shooting deer off your land but I guess they do that about any time of the season! I just LOVE to bowhunt the rut, nothing like an early, frosty Nov. morning!!!
wtnhunt
Re: Interesting Article!!! The rut here usually starts around the first week of the gun season, however I like to hunt whenever I can. Seen some of the best movement here during the muzzleloader season which is between the gun and archery seasons.
Master_Chief
Re: Interesting Article!!! I agree with Hunting em both. I know some guys that use archery season as a scouting season and if one comes close good if not at least they were in the woods and seeing deer. Tominator
Re: Interesting Article!!! In order to get a big buck, you have to be in an area that has big bucks, IMHO. For instance, you could have the best set up with gun or bow and you hunt every legal day in Florida, and you'll probably never shoot a record class buck. Some of the best deer areas like Iowa and Illinois don't allow rifles. And even though we have puny deer here in Ohio, you can't use a rifle here either. If you want a record class buck, hunt where they are, and use all legal means to harvest the animal. Just my .
Guest marylandbowman
Re: Interesting Article!!! i know here in maryland i see and pass up tons of bucks during the bow season. but in the gun 2 week gun season the buck sightings go down alot.the only reason i believa gun hunters have a better chance is there are alot more out there during the gun seasons. with that said i do think you need to hunt all the seasons because the more time in the woods the better chance you have in the long run!!!!another thing is what tominator said about hunting were big deer live. you cant kill something thats not there!!!the more mature bucks in your area the better if thats what your after!!!!!!!!!!! That is exactly why I hit the road to hunt out of state every year. First rule for killing big bucks is to hunt were they exist in huntable numbers. If you want your best chance at killiing those big bucks with a bow, IMHO you should hunt those states that are known to have them along with those that have the shortest gun seasons. Also, their bow season should coincide with their prime rutting period. I read the artile too and honestly it didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know. I have been an all season kind of hunter that spends as much time as possible in the woods. The more time you're out there, the better your odds. Also, the more time you spend scouting outside the season, the better your odds are for choosing the right tree to hang stands in too. doughboy1956
Re: Interesting Article!!! Was the mention of high fenced areas brought up in that article. If you pay the big dollars to hunt pened up deer than you will get what you pay for. Not the kind of hunting i like. Never did, never would.
