arrow32
Re: Crossbows...good or not? Caught up.lol No the way i see it is that its a great way to get more people out in the woods. But i think ill stick to my bow like i have for the last 4 years. And i also think that there is somthing different about shooting a cross bow than a bow although they shoot the same ranges and things. But jsut my thoughts. Not trying to offending anyone. hoyt_hunter
Re: Crossbows...good or not? i agree with vermonthunter, if it's legal go for it. in my state u have to be disabled and have a permit to use one. personally i think it's great that nebraska crossbow hunters are being able to hunt more during bowseason. Muff
Re: Crossbows...good or not? oh oh...I think I just heard a can of worms being opened...lol Well I use one....maybe some day I will get a bow but for now with the kids and work being so busy I just do not have time to practice with a bow....So its not fair to the animals.....one shot one kill....JMO
tp793
Re: Crossbows...good or not? I used one this season with great success. I think it is great for someone like Muff who simply doesn't have the time, someone who is disabled, or for the youth. I don't see anything wrong with using them, and think that it gets a lot more people outdoors. BUT, I think if you have the time and are fully capable of shooting a normal compund, or longbow then you should. Just my $0.02. Not trying to offend anyone, like I said, i used one this season so am by no means criticizing those who use them..
Ohiobucks
Re: Crossbows...good or not? Use it and don't listen to what other people say, cause there are some vocal critics everywhere when it comes to crossbows. I agree with vermothunter, if the state says it is legal, go for it. At least your on our side, hunters must stand up for hunters. If you were a PETA member, even though that is legal too.....I would have some different thoughts.... BOHNTR
Re: Crossbows...good or not? I agree to a point.....If it is legal to use in a particular season, have at it and enjoy the outdoors. With that being said, it is my personal opinion they are NOT archery and do not belong in the archery only season. Put them in the primitive weapons and/or general season. rockefeller66
Re: Crossbows...good or not? I am not one to say it is wrong to hunt with a cross bow, it has its own challenges. I guess here in IA they aren't legal to hunt with so I can't say I am too familiar with them but I would say if they were legal I think they would be a blast to hunt with! From what I hear they still only shoot out to about 40 yards accurately and are a lot faster I guess but louder.
Master_Chief
Re: Crossbows...good or not? If it's legal go for it. I agree that it should be used outside of archery season and archery only zones.

Guest deerhntnwithdogs
Re: Crossbows...good or not? I have absolutely no problem with them BUT I do agree with Bohntr, They are not archery and do not belong in the archery season. Just because something shoots a little arrow doesnt mean its archery tackle. It should be placed in Muzzle loader season or regular arms season but it is not a bow. Did anybody else ever do those puzzles in school as a kid where they would draw pictures on a worksheet and you had to figure out the relation ex. wear ------ = underwear (get it cuz the lines are under wear) Well anyway a friend brought it to my attention that theres another like a no smoking sign with a circle and slash threw the word bow and it stands for crossbow...or No Bow I dunno I just thought it was Ironic. haha But like I said if its legal go for it. I just dont support it in the archery season is all. JMO
Doc
Re: Crossbows...good or not? Boy, I would just love to be sitting there, with the crosshairs settled in on a buck's vitals just waiting to touch off the trigger when he finally gets into range. Maybe I could be all bench rested, waiting at full draw without that aggravating holding weight limiting how long I can wait for the deer to approach and provide that perfect shot. And, then not to risk getting busted by making all that ridiculous drawing motion at the critical time just prior to the shot. I would love to not have to worry about grip, arm position, anchor consistancy, follow-through, stance and all the other pain-in-the-neck disciplines required to shoot a vertical bow. But then, I realize that I get to experience exactly all of that when gun season finally rolls around. Doc

Just my opinion from target shooting with one in the past is they are a short range weapon. If given a choice between hunting with a xbow and a compound I'd still hunt with a compound bow simply because I can consistently hit where I want to at 30 and 40 yards and less with a compound as opposed to a xbow. A 20 to 25 yard shot is sort of a gimmie to me with a compound anyway. That's one of the reasons I keep switching back and forth with trad gear. For the fun of it I was shooting at 20 yards with a compound while another guy was shooting a xbow. The difference in groups at that range was negligable between the 2. My groups were tighter at 30 yards and the compound shooter wouldn't shoot at 40 because he didn't know where it would hit. With that said, I personally wouldn't hunt with a xbow if I had the choice when you consider the excess weight of a xbow and how cumbersome that sucker would be in a treestand. They are also pretty noisy too. My decision has nothing to do with morality issues, just preference toward hunting with compounds and recurves. As far as I'm concerned, if you want to hunt with one, you're choice.

Adjam5
Re: Crossbows...good or not? If the weapon is legal in your state, then by all means use it to hunt with. Use whatever resources you have to hunt with...as long as you hunt. I am going thru this discussion now on another BB about wether crossguns are bows. Take a look at this info... crossgun comparisons I don't feel it should be in archery season either. But I will support anyones right to hunt whatever way is legal. IMO, The thrill of taking game with a compound, long or recurve is much more thrilling to me than just pulling the trigger....IMO. OK? I gun hunt too, but my passion is the BOW. Straight Shooter
Re: Crossbows...good or not? Adjam5, that is a very good comparison from the NYB and I totally agree with it. I'm not against the use of one where it's legal to use and legal to obtain under a handicap regulation permit. I also think it does give others oppertunities to hunt. But once again it's not a bow, this is becoming a very heated discussion especially with the P&Y board, because it's trying to be pushed (by manufacturer's) to allow harvested animals by a crossbow for entry into the books. It's a very heated debate and it'll probably be a long one as well. I for one am staying on the compound side, I love my vertical bows and God willing, will keep shooting them.

[ QUOTE ] ther not legal here in wv but i yould like to try and hunt with one if it ever comes legal they look like fun [/ QUOTE ] They will be legal in WV during the 2006 season for HANDICAPPED persons only with upper extremity problems and those who apply for a permit must have a doctor excuse with strict DNR rules of eligibility.....the seasons have not been set but I think they will be allowed during our traditional archery season for those handicapped hunters who are permited to hunt with a crossbow.
