Jeramie
Im heading to Bass Pro this evening. While im there im picking up some calls to take on my first full blown dog hunt. (Ive killed before but never actually went looking for them). They make a little digital call and have tons of mouth calls. What would you suggest? I dont have the $300 for a pro setup but I can spend the 25-30 for the little hand held. What say ye? Also, what are some decent mouth calls at bass pro? What brings them in the best? Cotton tail? (etc.) Thanks gang.... Jeramie
Squirrelhunter91
Re: First full blown yote hunt... need info. Jeramie, I assume the handheld ecall you are referring to is the Cass Creek Caller. It is a good little unit for the money but, not the best. I'm sure it has called in a bunch of critters for hunters everywhere, but it just isn't as good as the expensive callers. I personally own a Foxpro 416, yes, $400, but well worth it. I will never need a new unit ever again. As for hand calls, any distress call will work. You don't even have to have the critter in your area to have it work for them. I have heard stories over on the Foxpro forum about the jackrabbit distress sound working for guys in Africa calling jackals! But right now the coyotes are in the mating season. They mate up in Late February- Early March. Distress tactics probably will not work right now. Now the stands are getting longer to about 30-45 minutes with howling sequences and serenades. If you call any dogs in, it will almost be guaranteed you call in a pair, and possibly pull of a double on a single stand. Good luck! arrow32
Re: First full blown yote hunt... need info. Depending on the winter you have had i think will depend on how your distress calls work. We have had a mild one so i have used more howling and such than distress but have used distress wiht luck but havnt been able to hit em. Bad shot dont know why. Jeramie
Re: First full blown yote hunt... need info. We have had a MILD winter. We finally got our first real snow last week. We are still 15+" behind on moisture. It never got really cold. We were having 70 degree weather in December! Ill trying the howling first. They are very vocal where im hunting. IF that doesnt cut it after a while ill change it up....
Squirrelhunter91
Re: First full blown yote hunt... need info. Hey Jeramie.. check out this link... http://www.allpredatorcalls.com/foxpro_sounds.htm Listen to the howl sounds and try and remember an audio of the each howl. This way, you can kind of work to the coyotes and decipher what mood they are in. You know what I mean? For example, if you have a female letting out invitation howls, you don't wanna hammer her back with a male challenge. You know what I mean? Jeramie
Re: First full blown yote hunt... need info. Not so good! It surprised me at first. My families ranch has way to many yotes so I thought it was a sure win deal. I see yotes almost every time I deer hunt. Anyway, I got out Saturday... It was cold and still. I hunted for about 2-hours and never saw a single thing. I decided to move and thats when I saw the two old cows that had died a couple of hundred yards apart. They were half eaten so im sure the yotes were holed up..... I dont think they would have come to anything! I hunted a little longer (over the cows) but I think it was pointless.
