Re: Is that a deer?

For sure. I have seen several bush deer..lol. I shot a clump of snow that had pine needles in it once with my shotgun. I thought 100% it was a rabbit. My buddy gave me alot of grief, until I took him to the spot where I shot from. It looked jst like a rabbit, except it had a few more holes in it. grin.gif

Try turkeys for noise in the timber, they go to roost about 100 yards from on of my stands and you would swear there cannot be any limbs left in the oak tree when they are done getting in it. They scratch through the timber as they walk. Sounds like a herd of deer moving at you.

As for the low light question just the other morning I swore it was a bedded deer 50 yards away.....ended up just being some dirt in a mound and some roots. LOL

Have you ever noticed on a slow day, that around dusk anything in the woods can look like a deer?

Yep that happens all the time, except for the one time I went down to PA, years ago. When scouting, we found a lot of bear sign, so on that particular hunt, everything looked like a bear in the early morning and late evening light. I haven't had a lot of experience around bears, and that was quite un-nerving.

yep

i tend to make note of things around me and mark them, so they don't fool me later.

opossums tend to fool me. they walk cautiously with purpose, and they come out right at dusk usually.

That is what I try to do as well. Try to make a mental note of all of the stumps, downed trees, etc that could be deer when it gets darker.

Squirrels really stink. I have only seen one opposum in the woods, but that was right around 2pm so I could see it before I got to excited.

Re: Is that a deer?

Two years ago I was in a box blind with my back against some heavy brush. About 15 minutes before dusk I heard some grunting from about 30 yards behind me. The brush was so think that I couldn't see what it was. It kept getting closer and closer untill it was right under me literally. The grunting was coming from under the floor, then it started scratching against the post that was holding the stand up. I could actually feel the vibrations in the wall. I pulled my gun out the window to get a quick shot at this brute. After what seemed like 5 minutes (probibly 30 seconds) he came out.

The biggest armadillo I've ever seen.
