silentgate
Seems the older I get the harder it is for me to lift a deer into my 4wd pickup! I know the easiest solution would be to seek help. But I was just wondering if anybody else out there was having this problem and found a way to conquer this chore by themselves by using some kind of gadget or gizmo to load their deer(??) wtnhunt
Re: Loading a deer The loader bucket on the tractor is the way to go. I do still use the truck on occasion, and usually get the wife to help me if it is a big deer. If I am by myself and have no help and have to use the truck, I just grab a hold of the hind legs and drag the body up until enough of it is in the bed, then get down and grab the front legsd and pull them around. sasksheds
Re: Loading a deer Dad always has a come along & a ramp.He hooks the come along to the front of the box & winches the deer up the ramp into the back of the truck. Stinger-Hunter
Re: Loading a deer Same with me, I just get on the bed of the truck grap the horns or the front feet and heave it up. Only takes a second.

Tominator
Re: Loading a deer i can still heft them up over the tailgate alone when i need to, but the day will come when i won't be able to do that. i'd say the average field dressed deer in these parts weighs around 140. i guess i'll use a ramp and some sort of ratcheted pully system, or a come-a-long, or break down and get a winch when it gets to the point where i can't lift them anymore. hutchies
Re: Loading a deer Dunno how much it cost but they made those swinging lift winches that use a pulley sysemt to pick it up and then the arm swings around into the bed. superguide
Re: Loading a deer I'd like to see you pick up a deer in Saskatchewan and just 'throw' it in -tooo funny. Take a sheet of plywood-tie a rope around head to front of truck-put end of plywood on truck bed-roll deer on other end-lift it up and wiggle it in. Like someone said a come along woreks good-or I just 1/4 them in the bush first.

Guest deldeer
Re: Loading a deer i throw them in the truck!!!!!!......or you can pull your truck to within 15 feet of a tree. tie a rope on the tree, throw it over the cab of the truck, tie it to the 2 back legs of your deer, then get in and back up fast as you can go!!!!!!!! the deer will automatically fly up & land in the truck bed or back window, but it will be loaded!!!! billygoat
Re: Loading a deer Ryan H, you only have one back! but on the flip side you give me job security in the health care field (lol) the orthopedics will love you. The carriers that fit into the 2 inch receivers are nice options, winch will work also as well as a comealong, best option is to find a friendly hunter to give you a quick hand... I've not found many that say no.
ladydiehard
Re: Loading a deer Well, the men of the group come to my rescue but I do lend a hand. We just take it by front and back legs and swing the deer into whatever its being transported in. If its a really large deer, a third person gives a lift in the middle of the deer body. Works for us. elkoholic
Re: Loading a deer If available, a hill or bank can come in quite handily or even backing into a ditch to get the tailgate closer to the deer. I have even been known to pull a deer up on a stump to get it closer to the level of my tailgate. When on level ground, sit the deer up on it's butt with it's back against the tailgate and do a deep knee bend putting your shoulder under the deer's front legs, grab the it by the butt and, lifting with your legs, lift the deer up and over the tailgate. SaskMan
Re: Loading a deer I'm not sure where I learend this but it comes in handy when you have a big buck down by yourself. Take a 6ft step ladder with you, roll the deer on to the ladder, secure it with rope at the head, middle and bottom. Now use the laws of physics and use it like a lever. life one end up, put it on the tailgate, lift the other end up and slide it in. Makes a 300 lb animal seem like 50 pounds. Like I said I'm not sure where I got the idea, maybe the teacher in me thought it up after a science lesson.

AaronS
Re: Loading a deer If I'm hunting an area where I can use my atv, I just drive the atv onto the truck. Sometimes it's a job to get them on the atv though. If I'm hunting public ground where I can't use the atv I stand on the tailgate, squat down and grab them, then heave them in. One of these days I won't be able to do it anymore. Last week I built my dad one of these (deer hoist) and will probably build myself one someday.
