wtnhunt
But didnt. Have killed several deer, but still have not killed a deer with my bow in all the years I have been hunting. Have had opportunities, just never the right deer at the right time. Saturday morning had several deer come in and had a great quartering away shot on a 5 point at 20 yards. He got behind some brush and stopped and was heading right for my lane. I could have drawn while he was in the brush, but did not. He stepped out in my lane and stopped and looked back at the does back to my right in the brush offering a great shot, but I passed it up. The does were hung up down wind of me and would not come across into my lane for anything, I was hoping they would follow this buck and I would get a shot at the biggest doe of the group, but just never happened. They went away and came back several times always hanging up in about the same spot. Eventually about 8 a.m. they all wandered away towards the field. About 8:20 here comes a single deer. I get my bow ready and can see it is a smaller deer. A spike buck, he was very young. He came in turned offered me a shot in about the same spot the 5 point had been, and then came around and walked within 5 feet of my stand. Passed him up too. Sunday morning on the way back from the stand after sitting for nearly 4 hours and seeing nothing I get a few steps out into my field and see a deer feeding in the clover plot about 15 yards in front of our ladder blind. Stalked my way to within 20 yards and got on one knee, drew my bow, then raised up the deer I thought was a small doe turned out to be a button buck, he spotted me and I had my finger ready to touch the release, but did not. He hesitated looked at me stomped a few times then went for a short 20 yard trot, stopped still in range me still at full draw then he casually trotted off. Beginning to think I should quit being picky just to get one down with the bow.

People get a little too hung up sometimes. Espically for a first deer. Bag one life is too short. You've got the rest of your life to be picky. [/ QUOTE ] A little further into this as part for my reasoning on passing young bucks with the bow is that I have an 8 year old daughter that is hunting this year and a wife who is after her first buck this year. NO, I have not killed a deer with my bow, but have killed quite a few over the years. Why would I want to take a shot on a 1.5 year old deer and place my tag on it when my daughter might get to shoot that deer for her first? I would not shoot a 1.5 year old buck with my rifle or muzzleloader, should I really drop my standards just to get the first one with the bow down? [/ QUOTE ] Sounds like you have your priorities in order to me. Don't worry or pressure yourself about your 1st bow kill. It will come but I'll bet your daughter's and wife's 1st deer will be more special to you. It's your choice about dropping your standards to bag your 1st one with a bow. If it makes you happy let it fly. If not, don't. Only you can answer those questions. The main thing is to enjoy being out there.
GWSmith
Re: Could\'ve, probably should\'ve William, Shoot what makes you happy. Only you have to be happy with it not anyone else. You have alot of control to pass up some of those shots...be proud of that.
