Elk Bullet help.

I have used Winchester power points in the versitile 150 gr out of my 7mm rem mag for years hunting antelope, elk and muleys. I got into an arguement with my brother tonight about them He said they aren't a very good choice. I have taken 6 elk 2 bulls and 4 cows and only had to shoot 2 of them twice. Do you think my choice in ammo is ok or what are your recomendations?

Re: Elk Bullet help.

I used to use the power points for deer awhile back. I stopped using them because I thought they damaged to much meat. They definitly did the job. I think that if what you are using is putting the game down consitently then why change to something else. I currently shoot the 160gr. Accubonds from my 7mm Rem. Mag and love them. It's all a matter of personal preference. Hope this helps.

Re: Elk Bullet help.

Your ammo choice is just fine. You have 6 elk to prove they do work. Will a fancy, premium, more expensive bullet kill them any deader? Nope. Winchester Power Points and Remington Core Lokt bullets have been dropping big game animals all over this continent for decades. I will lay money they will continue to do so in the future. Tell your brother not to worry about what you are shooting.

Re: Elk Bullet help.

Here's my 2 cents worth. You probably have killed more elk than 90% of the people at this site. Sounds like your choice of 150 grains are working just fine so why change. I don't have any 1st hand expereince with a 7 mag---I shoot an 06 & use PP, Core-lokts & interlocks for 25 years with never a problem---180 grain bullets. I saw a study done on the 300 Win Mag & to make a long story short the Win PP did just about as well as the so called premium stuff.

But with all that said IMO when you start pushing 3000 fps your standard bullets start to have problems. I think that the 270, 7 mag, 300WSM, 300 win mag-----one should really seriously consider going to a Nolser Partition, bonded bullets, A frame or Barnes.

FYI--this year I plan on trying out Federal's 180 grain Nolser partition out of my 30/06----I don't know why---just something different. I'm pretty sure the elk won't be any deader, than the one last year that got it thru the lungs with a "Core-Lokt".

So in conclusion---I think you should keep your knife sharp & continue using the Win PP. CB
