Guest Andrea
The other day as I was exiting the woods from my stand I noticed something laying beside my truck. It was almost dark then and I thought it was a sack of trash.............til it moved. Turned out to be a hunting dog that decided to curl up beside my truck. He had a radio collar and a name tag. Some other fellas that were there were NOT to happy to see this dog. They wanted to "dispose" of it. ( We have had several hunts ruined by these dogs.) But I loaded him up and took him home. Called the person on the collar and waited for him to come get his dog. The dog was starving to death and ate EVERYTHING I gave him. I felt sorry for him but at the same time I was irate that this person decided to let his dog go in a still hunt area. When he finally showed up 2 days later I told him that he's lucky that I found the dog because the other people would have killed him. And I may not be the one who finds him the next time. Some people just don't care. Sorry...I just wanted to vent.
Gator
Re: Lucky hunting dog Was the guy even happy you found the dog? Maybe the mutt wasn't turned loose in a still hunt area, but wandered around until he ended up there? I used to see that down where we hunted, dogs end up miles from where they started. Guest Andrea
Re: Lucky hunting dog [ QUOTE ] Was the guy even happy you found the dog? [/ QUOTE ] He was a young guy. Not very talkative. Said he let the dogs go the night before in the "dog" area and he usually caught them in the morning. I let him know that it was pretty rude to do that since everyone is still trying to hunt. I figured that by the looks of the dog.....he had been running for a LONG time not just over night. ( Severly underweight and lots of bloody scratches) And his address on his collar was from the adjoining county. His reason for turning the dogs loose was for "exercise". I suggested he wait til hunting season was over or else he may never get his dog back the next time.
Guest Xen
Re: Lucky hunting dog contact your local animal control and let them know about the condition of the dog, let them know he has more that are probably in the same condition and what an irresponsible animal owner he is. he'll get a visit and an inspection, and depending on what they find, he could be put on a check-uplist and get a visit every month
vagobbln
Re: Lucky hunting dog This response will bring all the responsible, "we don't do that way" dog hunters out of the woodwork (and I know there are some of you out there) but, that's exactly why I don't like dog hunting. I see this kind of stuff around me all the time. If you drop your dogs out and they don't all come back - fine. If they run all over someone else - so be it. A dog can't read a posted sign, right? Worst of all, most of the dog “clubs” in my area seem to think they have some sort of inalienable right to shoot at a deer just because “their” dogs were running it - wherever that may be. I had it out with a guy this year for just that. He shot at a deer (from a public road no less) his dogs ran on to the property I was hunting. He had no idea were I was either. I guess I should have been listening to the CB and I’d have known they were coming (Oh, that’s right I don’t have one). I’m not trying to p**s off any of you guys who dog hunt and do it right. I’m just saying most of the “clubs” around me don’t (do it right). I think maybe “cabs” is a better term for them than “clubs”. That’s where most of them shoot from. archerjg
Re: Lucky hunting dog I probably would have asked the guy if I could have him or buy him. Some people just don't care about the animals that they get. You did a good thing though Huntin Girl. Archerjg

huntinsonovagun
Re: Lucky hunting dog He evidently didn't want the dog too badly if he waited 2 days to pick him up. Should have charged him for 2 days room and board.
Guest Andrea
Re: Lucky hunting dog [ QUOTE ] I'd have been tempted to keep him. [/ QUOTE ] I don't need another dog , especially one that wants to run deer all the time. I was ready to call the humane society the next morning had he not shown up. doughboy1956
Re: Lucky hunting dog Seen some dogs at a deer on the ice one time. They were on the ice and i was on a train. Not very good at all. I wish people would control their dogs.
