Guest GreenHead
what do you guys think the perfect antelope calibre is? i am looking for a gun that will go 500yards with out dropping 25inches. right now i have a 30-06 but i want something that isnt so big. thanks
AJ
Re: Antelope gun How about keeping your 30-06 and learning to judge wind and distance? While you are at it, get closer to the target. If you sight in your 30-06 with a 165 gr bullet going 3000 fps, right at 4.3" high at 100 yards, you will be just under 25" low at 500 yards. But from 150 to 200 yards your bullet will be 5.5" higher than point of aim.
JKAPP01
Re: Antelope gun i agree with AJ.......at 500 yards away....an antelope is merely a dot in the scope.....they almost run faster than the **** bullet
Guest AllArmyoutdoorsSD
Re: Antelope gun 500 yds is a bit far. But I shoot a model 70 25-06 with a BOSS. 100 grain nozzler particians, great for distance lousy up close and forget trying to shoot in the wind
too_pointer
Re: Antelope gun [ QUOTE ] 500 yds is a bit far. David_218
Re: Antelope gun I believe I'd try to sneak in closer shot, than 500 yards, and try for a 350 yard shot. Better to try a shot @ 350 then try one @ 500 and end up wounding an Antelope.
AJ
Re: Antelope gun [ QUOTE ] I just bought a 25-06 barrel for my Encore and plan on using it for antelope this coming fall !! too_ [/ QUOTE ] It will work just fine. Would I steer you wrong? Shooting a 100 gr bullet with a 10 mph crosswind will only move the bullet 6" at 300 yards. That is not bad. Guest AllArmyoutdoorsSD
Re: Antelope gun Let me explain, I hunt goats with particians, up close they tend to explode prior to penetration, and very rarely is there only a ten MPH cross wind in SD. The 25-06 is great at long range and my model 70 with the BOSS is a tack driver out to 400. Just spend time with your rifle and find out what ammo IT prefers. G-Daddy
Re: Antelope gun I shot both a buck and doe antelope with my 25-06 last fall. Both animals at 200 yards in pretty stiff winds. The Nosler 110 gr Accubond bullets performed well, resulting in pass thorugh on the shoulders of both animals. I did recover a bullet from a mule deer that retained 61% of its weight while expanding to .457"
rifleman25
Re: Antelope gun I've hunted them all of my life out here and have used everything from a 22-250 to a 308. Tere is absolutely no excuse to need to shoot that far. I've ever only killed one over 350. Any modern centerfire rifle in a legal caliber will work as antelope are a small animal. A big buck might weigh in the neighborhood of a hundred pounds on the hoof. Get real and practice with your gun.

theweston123
i would have to say a 243 that guns is goin about 3,000 fps and i can hit a clay skeet target with a fmj 70 to 100 grain at 400 yards
Shaun_300
Geez, what's with people digging up old threads around here lately?
huntinman802
i agree with theweston, the .243 is an extremely accurate and flat shooting gun. there are always people saying thay arent big enough, and yes, maybe for a moose they arent but for whitetail, mule deer and antelope they are perfect. i shoot 85 gr. hollow points out of mine and i can hit a nat off a fly's butt at 400 yds. and almost always go through both shoulders, ive shot over 25 deer with it and only 3 have taken a step after. wtnhunt
If my daughter does not get drawn for elk, we will be taking a .243 and a .270 for mulie and antelope this fall.
Tecumseh
I think I'd get a little closer,I'm going to use my 280 if I ever go on a speed goat hunt, the 25-06 is a good caliber or the 7MM-08 imo.
jokostel
For antelope, stick with your "speed" rounds 2506 with 87s or 100s (87s are borderline on SD) 257 Roy- 100s,110s, or 115s--- My roy is winding the 110s around 3500 if I remember correctly. Regardless--- the round you use should NOT be a crutch for the shooters inability to work with his/her enviromental conditions. I've made kill shots on goats WAY past the 1/4 mile marker and creeping on 550yards---but the conditions were just right and I was at a 100%.... does that make it right? Thats always a variable. For me the closer you can get in a stalk--the better....but when they break- it's time to lay down the law.
bowana
That old 30-06 will do anything the smaller bores will do...and better. I love the 25-06 and the 257 Roberts. They are a couple of my personal favorites. But, The 7mm mags and 30 bores tend to handle the wind a little better. Don't worry about over kill...I can guarantee that the speed goat will not complain and a good taxidermist can fix big holes at no or little cost. Choose a bullet like the 180 gr Nosler Accubond. Any bullet that has a high ballistic coefficient is the ticket. This bullet is close to .500. :gunsmilie:
