I've been shopping around for a rifled cantilever slug barrel for my Remington 1100.They are not cheap to say the least.I was even thinking of just getting a new slug gun for the price these things are going for.I came across one on gunbroker.com that's made by Ithaca for a heck of a deal.Is it worth buying or are they kinda crappy?

Re: Ithaca Barrels?

Ithaca has been in and out of business so many times it makes your head spin.

Last time I looked, they were in bankruptcy again. I'm sure AJ knows the status of them now.

I have a Model 37 20 gauge. It was my first gun, I bought it in 1980 off my cousin. Now, this is not a rifled barrel, it was my primary bird gun. One thing I always noticed on that gun is that the front pink plastic bead was put on crooked, and whoever welded it left a weld mark in the barrel. To be honest, I don't know if Ithaca did that, or my cousin. I always wondered if that little bead in the barrel would make a difference. Well, after about 15 years of great shooting, I took a shot at a rabbit, and the report just sounded weird. As my dog took off after the rabbit, I took off after my dog (I missed the rabbit). And while I was walking, I noticed that the end of the barrel blew out! Split right down the middle about an inch. Looked like something out of a Bugs Bunny cartoon.

Like I said, it was a smooth bore, so I don't know if that helps you or not.

Re: Ithaca Barrels?

Both the Rem. and Hastings barrels are good quality. I have one of each. The Hastings is an older version which had to have a long eye relief or scout scope attached. It is a tack driver but I never really got used to the scope arrangement. I use a Remington rifled cantilever barrel now and am very satisfied. The Remingtons are 21" long as opposed to the Hastings 24". Neither is cheap but both work well and are proven.

I do have a rifled choke tube for the Rem. choke barrel which works very well with saboted slugs. You still have to mount your scope to the gun though.

If it were me, I'd save a little more and get something I was sure that's going to work well and hold its value.

i own an ithica deer slayer, to me its the best slug gun you could ever get. its sighted in for 100 yards but shoots out to 200 yards accurately. i would suggest getting a ithica.

I went to Gander to but an Ithaca barrel for my 870. I walked out with an H&R Ultra Slugger in 12GA. Haven't been the least bit disappointed.

That's kinda what I was thinking.A Hastings or Rem. rifled slug barrel for the 1100 is between $220 and $260.I could get the H&R and set it up with a scope for that price.
