Re: Snake boots for AL hunt

Being right next door to AL here in MS, I would think it really depends on the weather conditions and what part of AL you'll be hunting. Most of my hunting is in the southwest part of MS but I have on occasion hunted around central MS and the east/central part of the state about 30 miles west of the AL line. Our season opens on March 15th just like AL and I don't usually have to bother with wearing snake boots until April unless it's an unusually warm spring day. On those warmer spring days around this part of the country I always wear my Rocky snakeboots. I have stepped on a snake or 2 before while turkey hunting down here. shocked.gif Talk about jumping and running on air! There's been a number of other times that I came pretty darn close to stepping on one. I see snakes every spring. It's usually a late morning or afternoon problem to be concerned about though. I've only had one snake strike my boot in my 30+ years of turkey hunting and not above the ankle. Once was enough for me though. I heard about a guy that was struck on the rear end while setting up but that was over 20 years ago. After hearing about that, I always look before I sit. You better do that too. Your call on the boots bud. wink.gif

Re: Snake boots for AL hunt

I've only had a couple close encounters with snakes during all the years of turkey hunting here in Alabama. A couple of times I just didn't see them and almost stepped right on them. It was early in the season so they were fairly inactive. Another time I was setup near a swamp and had one literally sliver inches from the end of my boots. I hunt a lot of rocky areas where the snakes are more plentiful so I always wear my snake boots.

The boots don't do you a bit of good if you sit on Mr. Noshoulders. Scratching leaves away with your hand to make a place to sit is another way boots don't help.

Look down a lot and watch every step. Make sure there are no hidey holes in that fallen tree that looks like such a good backstop. wink.gif

Re: Snake boots for AL hunt

I got a pair to hunt WV and northern PA. There aren't a whole lot of rattlers here in PA. But there are some really big ones!! Never ran into one when hunting, thankfully. But I wear my snake boots all the time.....even around the Strut10 Ranch where there are no poisonous snakes at all. Why?? Great ankle support. wink.gif If you do get a pair that lace up........be sure to get speed-lacers on the top. The ones with eyelets or D-rings the whole way up are a pain in the butt to properly tighten. And a pair of ill-fitting snakeboots are about the most miserable things you can put on your feet. Oh...... and the extra-high snakeboot sox........... they're worth every penny. wink.gif

Picked up a pair of the snake gaitors this weekend and tried them on. Could not find a pair of boots that felt comfy to me. Hope they work ok. Will let you know.

Some snake gaiters are very very noisy. Hope yours aren't.
