Former NASCAR Busch Series driver Shane Hmiel has been given a lifetime suspension from the sport – the first for violations of NASCAR’s substance-abuse policy.

Hmiel, who was indefinitely suspended from NASCAR on June 3 last season following a second violation of the substance-abuse policy, had been participating in a rehabilitation program directed by NASCAR.

While in that program, Hmiel failed a random drug test last month, prompting the lifetime suspension, NASCAR officials confirmed.

"Shane failed to fulfill the prescribed rehabilitation program outlined by NASCAR. As a result, Shane has forfeited his opportunity to compete in any NASCAR-sanctioned events," said NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston.

Shane’s father, Steve Hmiel – technical director for Dale Earnhardt Inc. – chose not to comment on Friday when asked about Shane’s suspension.

Hmiel, 25, was first suspended in September 2003 after failing a substance-abuse test. He completed a prescribed rehabilitation program and was reinstated for NASCAR competition in February 2004.

Hmiel has competed in seven Nextel Cup, 83 Busch and 29 Craftsman Truck series events in his NASCAR career. His only victory came in Trucks in 2004 at Las Vegas.

Last season, Hmiel began racing in the Carolinas-Virginia USAC Ford Focus Midget Series, competing at South Boston, Va.

Yeah, I heard this last year.

Nope..you didn't hear about the lifelong suspension last year. He just failed his 3rd drug test in the past week. This brought on his life long suspension. It is a total shame. While I wasn't real fond of him personally, the kid definately had a ton of driving talent. Must make his father Steve Hmeil, of D.E.I. feel like crap too.

Oh I was pretty sure that after his second offense last year they banned him from NASCAR for life because every was unhappy to see him leave. Maybe not though.

Re: Shane Hmiel suspended from NASCAR for life

NASCAR has got to be the worst sport for being fair to all of their drivers...

Jimmie Johnson had a pretty severe penalty at Daytona and all that happened was his crew chief was suspended for i believe 4 races...

Terry Labonte also had a penalty against him at Daytona, however, he was the unlucky one because he was docked drivers points, and his owner also lost points...

Hey NASCAR, dock Jimmie points too!!!

If MLB, the NBA, and the NFL enacted drug policies similar to Nascar, they'd soon run out of players.

Of all the football players in the NFL right now, I only heard of 2 or 3 suspensions for violations of the drug policy, and one of those is the most recent Ricky Williams fiasco..........don't lump the real players in with 2 or 3 idiots.
