remington870
Re: Realtree Turkey Team #4 went out today for my first time out. I had gobbles all over in front of me but never got one to commit. I did tick off a hen and she came within 15 yards looking for a fight, but for whatever reason the boys did not follow her and just hung out in the woods. Also saw seven deer this morning. Called it a day early and went steelhead fishing, caught 3! I will be out Friday as that is my next day off from work. Hopefully there is no rain in the forecast like today. M00N
Re: Realtree Turkey Team #4 Ah got to love when those darn gobblers get stubborn. I had troubles last year with them not coming in close enough or coming in on the wrong side of me which was the no-hunting zone and I couldn't shoot them legally. This year going to give it another try. I have 3 setups picked out and will have a whole solid week straight to go after a gobbler from morning to noon each day. I will miss the whole first week of our season though due to the inability for my hunting parter to get time off work, though. But hopefully going the second week will mean less hunters on the public land. I don't know anyone in this state with private land to even attempt to get private land hunting permissions. M00N
Re: Realtree Turkey Team #4 Nope I live southeast of Harrisburg, PA. Which is almost 5 hours from Washington, PA. I hunt in Clearfield, PA which is about 3 hours from Washington, PA and Cleafield, PA is 3 hours from Harrisburg, PA. The max my hunting partner will drive me to go hunting is 3.5 hours. I cannot drive and don't have a license, so I'm at the mercy of my hunting partner who's taking me hunting as to where I can go travel wise. Otherwise I'd be up in NY hunting with my guy friend on his private land most likely except it's about as far to Washington, PA as it is to go to where my guy friend hunts in NY. M00N
Re: Realtree Turkey Team #4 Well, I'm heading upstate Saturday to go turkey hunting here in PA. I'll be hunting Monday (May 8) to Friday (May 12) from sunrise to noon. Wish me luck. Hopefully I'll return with a bird. I'll be trying for a gobbler, but if the only thing I find are jakes or I happen upon a bearded hen I may end up taking one of those instead considering I'm hunting public land and you kind of take what you're given as the birds have had a week now to be chased around by hunters already. I'll sure give it my all none the less.
M00N
Re: Realtree Turkey Team #4 Well, I've returned from hunting empty handed. I had a gobbler behind the cabin no more than 100 yards. Tried to pursue him the one day by going up the ridge into the hunting zone and calling him up, but he wasn't around suddenly. I then found out the night before some kids were messing around near his roost and he got kicked off it and disappeared to another ridge for the rest of the week to not return. I then had 3 gobblers surrounding me another day, but had another hunter sneak in and shoot at the one (illegally) and scared them all away and killed the one he shot at which was the main one I was trying to call in. It was packed with hunters at that spot so I just gave up and went in search for another gobbler elsewhere. My final attempt was with another gobbler that I tried really hard to get, because he was a very big bird, but luck was not on my side and he managed to stay just out of reach everytime I got near him. Got to see him strut around though which was the first time I've had a turkey do that within view. I had a great time despite not getting a bird, but this is only my second year of turkey hunting, so hopefully next year will be my year. Wish I could have got one for the team. I gave it my all from Monday to Thursday after these birds. I even tried to get one of the jakes the one morning, but it was too weary of coming in due to all the hunters chasing the birds all over the place. It was crazy the amount of hunters around, but this is my only area I can hunt is public land I don't own private land and don't know anyone with private land. Here's a picture of the big guy I was after as he's strutting inside a forestry fence. He flys over a fence into a zone they have fenced off to protect the young trees from the deer, but when called to will pop right back over the fence to investigate. Technically I could have hunted inside the fence if I just called the forestry department and got verbal permission as it has gates on it that are always left unlocked, but I just didn't feel right hunting inside the fence so I hunted outside it instead.
