Rhino
Re: Realtree Turkey Team #24 [ QUOTE ] think that you're the team to beat. Good luck. [/ QUOTE ] We'll see. We still have to kill a high scoring bird for the 1st bird. As you know, it doesn't count in the contest if any birds killed after the 1st one are bigger. ny_gun
Re: Team ThunderStrut (#24) Sorry I was not around to help pick the team name. I was out of town the last few days. By the way the team name is great.

VtBowhunter
Re: Team ThunderStrut (#24) I spotted a flock behind my folks place today after work while on my way home. They were on my cousin's land, so I'll be stopping in to talk to him tomorrow night after work.

Covehnter
Re: Team ThunderStrut (#24) Went to listen this morning, heard one bird gobble one time. He's an ole boy that we left last year, still hangin' in the same place.Checked a farm on the way home to see 2 NICE longbeards are calling the pastures home. Things are starting to shape up a little.
Rhino
Re: Team ThunderStrut (#24) Sorry for the length but here's my weekend scouting report. We finally had a weekend without rain. It's rained the past 3 weekends. Friday afternoon I saw 1 mature gobbler, 3 jakes, and a flock of hens so I went to try to pattern the gobbler coming off his roost Saturday morning. He wasn't very cooperative. He only gobbled once and that was right after he flew down off the roost. He's probably one of those old devil birds. Two other birds were gobbling pretty good so I kept my distance and listened to their travel pattern (from their gobbling) until they shut down. They were traveling together after meeting up shortly after flydown so I have a fix on the pattern they used for the first 30 minutes after they came off the roost Saturday. After those birds quit gobbling I took off to where I had heard another gobbler in the distance while patterning the other 2 birds. I got close to where I thought I heard him last so I waited to hear if he'd tip me off with a gobble and let me know where he was. Another bird gobbled a couple of times in the distance and I'm familiar with where he was. I’ll check him out another time. Anyway, a minute or so later, I heard a hen yelping. She sounded more like a broken box call than a real hen. In the distance I could see a small part of a small food plot between 2 trees through the woods. I saw some movement through that narrow gap that looked like it might be a turkey. It couldn’t be the hen I was hearing because she was off to the right. I didn't want to risk busting whatever it was so I crawled another 50 yards to get behind a big tree where I could ease up behind it and see more of that small food plot through the woods. As I eased up I could see 2 mature birds in full strut in the food plot. A third bird strutted into view a few seconds later. I could still only see small parts of this food plot but 3 mature gobblers in full strut drumming loud was plenty to fire me up. Like I said, all the gobblers had full fans but the furthest gobbler was noticeably bigger than the other 2. Sure made me wonder if the biggest gobbler was the devil bird that made a dummy out of me that I hunted around there about 4 or 5 times last year. I threw the towel in trying to hunt him last year to go for easier prey. I watched them for a few minutes until the hen I heard appeared. She took the gobblers behind a thick brushy area between me and the food plot so I took advantage of that opportunity to leave the area without spooking the birds. Unless I find something more promising, I'll be hunting these birds come opening day. Hopefully get some payback for last year too. This morning I went to listen to another area where I killed 3 gobblers last year. This area is where I saw the jakes and hens Friday afternoon. I didn't hear any birds gobble on our property but it was a little windy and overcast this morning. It also didn't help for 3 guys to drive a truck in there to get 2 metal ladder stands within the last 2 hours before dark Saturday afternoon. One of the guys even commented on how much clanging and banging noise they made coming out of there Saturday afternoon. The only birds I heard gobbling were on the neighbor's property. Figures. I did see a couple of big mature gobblers while driving my cart on my way out of there but it was in an area I won't have access to hunt until the 2nd half of April. A couple more preseason scouting trips and I think I’ll be ready for the March 15th opener.
VtBowhunter
Re: Team ThunderStrut (#24) Next weekend will be the first good weekend we've had, so I'll be out there doing some scouting of my own. Sounds very promising, Rhino.
Covehnter
Re: Team ThunderStrut (#24) I went again this morning, heard 4 different birds. . . . 2 were gobbling good. . . . one of those just wanted to DIE!

Rhino
Re: Team ThunderStrut (#24) Dang VT, you've got a long wait till May 1st too before you can go after those birds. It would kill me to sit back and read turkey hunting stories from us southern hunters going on for 6 weeks before they opened the gate and turned me loose. How do you do it? VtBowhunter
Re: Team ThunderStrut (#24) Lots and Lots of scouting......this year won't be too bad. My oldest son is taking Hunter Safety this weekend. Hopefully he passes, then I can take all that extra time to get him ready for his first hunting seasons. Covehnter
Re: Team ThunderStrut (#24) Dang, i dont think there's going to be any birds left by the time i make it to FL, they're pounding them down there! Rhino
Re: Team ThunderStrut (#24) Dang Cove, then you’re just gonna have to bust one of those many bearded, long hooked gobblers. Best of luck to ya when you head to Florida. INHunterman I can type, I can left click, and right click, sometimes at the wrong time. Many times the clickin stuff is just a journey for me to become lost again. No talent here for the fancy sigs. Sorry. VT, we’ll try to help keep you entertained till you get to start too. Rhino
Re: Team ThunderStrut (#24) Heard 6 gobblers this morning. 4 were in the area where I didn't hear a single bird last Sunday and the other 2 were on the neighbors property. The weather forecast looks pretty good for this coming Wednesday which is our opening day. Thursday morning looks pretty good too. Both days it's supposed to be clear with lows in the mid 40's and high's in the upper 60's. I'm planning to hunt both of those 2 mornings. I'll play guide for my son next weekend. Could be ruff hunting next weekend though. Mostly cloudy and windy on Saturday with rain moving in Saturday night. Overcast with a chance of rain on Sunday. Who knows at this point though. I don't really trust a weather man past a few days this time of the year.
flyrod64
Re: Team ThunderStrut (#24) Well I'm finally here. Sorry it took so long to check in but I been pretty busy the past few weeks. Trying to get everything done so I'll be able to hunt and fish. LOL Trout season opens in 2 weeks then SPRING GOBBLER! Looks like everyones been seeing some. I've seen a few but haven't had time to do any real scouting yet. I just hope the weather doesn't get bad here again this year and shut em up like it did last year. GL all. Rhino
Re: Team ThunderStrut (#24) Season opens tomorrow morning and the weather looks great for the opener. My son is back from college for spring break and he's fired up about turkey hunting this year. He's going with me in the morning. If one bird comes in he'll do the shooting. If 2 or more come in we're going to try to get a double. It's not uncommon at all to have more than one gobbler traveling together this time of year. We're going to go to an area where I saw 3 birds strutting together within 30 minutes of fly down time on the morning of March 4th. I'll fill y'all in after the hunt. Rhino
Re: Team ThunderStrut (#24) [ QUOTE ] Let'em have it, Rhino!!!! [/ QUOTE ] Followed your instructions Josh but we only got one on this trip. Great hunt though. Complete story in the turkey hunting room with pic. My son was the designated shooter if only one gobbler showed himself. It was almost 2 birds though. One trailing gobbler got hung up behind an obstruction and shut up. We didn't know what happened to him so my son opened the season in fine fashion by slamming the bird in hand down. His gobbler weighed 19lb. 3oz., sported a 9 3/4" beard and 1 1/16" spurs. Looks like rain tomorrow so I'll catch up on sleep and give the birds a day off. My son left for a 3 day spring break trip this afternoon so I'm heading back to camp tomorrow night to try to do some more damage to the turkey population from Friday through Sunday morning. I'm just gettin warmed up teammates.
