Steamed

my wife's clothes dryer went belly up saturday (12 years of faithful service).

i told her we should just go get another one, because this one is so small. so we did. went out and bought a Maytag. got it home, hooked it up last night and ran a load around 10 p.m. last night. i got up at 2 a.m. to take my medicine and noticed the new dryer was still running.

turns out, my wife finally turned it off around 3 or so i guess, and the heater element never kicked on. mad.gif

man, i'm tired of new products not working around my house. now i've got the hassle of figuring out why.

thanks for the vent

Re: Steamed

Is that one of those new dryers with all the electronic crap Chris?

Used to know an appliance repair man in Florida, was good friends with my step father, he swore by the old Kenmores with the least electronics options the better. Our old Kenmore has been very used and is still going pretty well, think after 11 years it might need a new element though.

Re: Steamed

tominator you might check your dryer vent hose and make sure it is not blocked somewhere between the dryer and the end if it is the dryer will not heat up

vent hose is only 2' long right now. i'm in the process of venting this dryer to the outside, as our old one was not.

is it gas or electric

it's electric

Just a thought Chris, but did she maybe have it on some type of a air dry only without heat setting? Would check everything over before loading it up and taking it back.

nope, it's on the right setting--near as i can tell william. there's only 4 or 5 trouble shooting items on the list for "unit not heating up" i checked all of them. the only one i'm not 100% sure about is the one where they say to check the fuse or breaker. my thinking is that if it's running (and it does, just no heat) then the breaker hasn't tripped. how can a breaker partially trip? maybe they're talking about a breaker in the dryer, but they give no instructions on how to locate this breaker.

the only other thing i can think is plug. the plug i'm using has 3 prongs on it, and the top prong has a 90 degree bend to it the length of the prong.

i went to hook up the new cord they sold me, and realized they sold me the wrong kind of cord. the new cord has 3 prongs on it, but they're all flat. i'm thinking this new dryer draws more amperage, which needs a different cord, but i would think the old cord would trip the breaker if it wasn't sufficient.

Re: Steamed

Take a kind word of advice from someone who got screwed by Maytag,...call them and tell them you want a different brand.

I paid over $1500 for a set of Maytags-washer & dryer-Genesis. It was supposed to be top of the line. The washer was $1000.

4 years after I got it, the washer was junk, and they told me that there was no warranty for the problem.

I had it checked out, and it would cost more to fix it, then to buy another brand washer. I called Maytag customer service back up, and called them some real good names before telling them to stick the machine...well, you get the picture.

The dryer, thank god, is still running good. But, I swear I will never own another Maytag product as long as I live. Thier customer service is trash, and they don't stand behind thier high dollar products. Junk, plain and simple.

You can get the right type cord from a hardware store or Lowes/Home Depot. I had to change the cord on mine when we moved. It should be the same amps, just make sure you get the right gauge, it should be an appliance cord.

Chris if it is running it should be heating. If the cord is missing one leg of the 220 it would not be running. I would call Maytag, I assume they have an 800 number, and ask them before going to the trouble to load it up and take it back.

Honestly though I seriously think if I could not get it to work right I would take it back and get a Kenmore if it was me.

that's what i told heather. the installation guide calls for a 30 amp breaker, and that's what it's on, so i don't think that's the problem. i think i'm going to take it back, and head off to Sears, especially after all the rave reviews here in the forum about maytag. smirk.gif

now i have to get it back up the stairs. crazy.gif

hey Tom, what are you doing after work? grin.gif

Re: Steamed

well, Lowes did the right thing and backed their product, so i have to give them props and kudos.

my wife called the lowes yesterday and explained the situation. they took her name and directions to the house and came out first thing this morning.

the technician looked at it and pulled a fuse in the dryer. i guess this fuse was either bad or maybe we had a power surge (doubful), because the fuse was melted according to my wife.

anyway, they took the old new dryer and gave us a new new dryer---which worked by the way.

we'll see how long it lasts.

thanks for the help, suggestions and advice fellers.
