Fixed Position versus Adjustable Bowsites

While I have been shooting an adjustable from HHA (located in my former hometwon); I am switching to a Trophy Ridge 3 pin. I missed a real nice buck last year because I forgot to adjust the yardage; just clipping his brisket hair.

Has anyone else switched? After plunking down more than $100 for my Trophy Ridge I must confess to a little bit of buyers remorse; more than what my wife will say when she sees the bill - did I make the right call. confused.gif

Thanks,

John

Re: Fixed Position versus Adjustable Bowsites

To tell you the truth, I never understood why anyone would buy one of those adjustable sights. Fixed pins make more sense to me. Even though I shoot a pendulum sight, it is still a fixed pin sight.

Reaching forward to make a sight adjustment in hunting conditions is just out of the question for me.

I think you'll be happier with the new sight

Re: Fixed Position versus Adjustable Bowsites

I used an adjustable for years and had good luck with it mainly because I could only shoot from 15 to 30 yards from my stand. Now that I hunt over my food plot and can shoot out to 50 yards I have gone to a fixed sight.

Once you get used to useing multiple pins you will like it. Just takes practice not to use the wrong pin.

Re: Fixed Position versus Adjustable Bowsites

When I bought a new compound bow last summer I went back to multipe pin sights too. My prior compound has adjustable sights. I spent a few years hunting trad between hunting with those 2 bows.

Shooting with my old compound with adjustable sights, I practiced shooting different distances with my sight set for 20 yards so I would know where to aim for any yardage out to 30 yards. I wouldn't shoot past that because I found I had to hold over the top of the 3D target to hit the heart area with that bow close to the 35 yard mark. I did find myself a couple of times not having the opportunity to adjust the sight for a dead on aim while deer hunting. Sometimes you draw and the target moves to a different distance after you come to full draw. Fortunately it happened with deer inside the 30 yard line so it didn't cost me a shot opportunity.

I opted to go with multiple pins on my next compound to take the risk out of getting caught with an adjustable sight set at 20 with a deer that moved out beyond 30 after coming to full draw. No real adustment problem switching back to pins since I shot pins prior to using an adjustable sight anyway.

Re: Fixed Position versus Adjustable Bowsites

HELP! After installing the new site. I cannot drop the pins low enough for the top (20yd) pin to get on target. The left/right is perfect, but do I have to move the peep, the rest, the loop...I'm out of adjustment on the Trophy Ridge...ARRRRGGGGHHHH.

Can anyone offer advice on what to do next?

Re: Fixed Position versus Adjustable Bowsites

compensate or adj. ,does it really matter? adj .able sight you adj to the range you want , fixed pins you have to compensate for in between yardages . you could get mixed up either way. i made the mistake using the wrong pin on a fixed pin but this was my fault not the sights. i will be using a hha slider this year set at 22 yds. , all i will need to do is hold a little higher for 30 yds and a little lower for close shots. this will be my decision at the shot. the only sight i see as a perfect tree stand sight would be a pendulom sight , no more quess work. but i believe my bow set up will be fast enough for the slider . the choice is yours, adj. or compensate?

Re: Fixed Position versus Adjustable Bowsites

Problem I could see with the adjustable is you have it set for a set distance and the deer moves away from you and then you have to try and re-adjust. Might not be able to do that where as fixed pins are there and you just move to the next pin.

I did have one and it was nice but their are cons to it as well.
