LETMGROW
Re: what are the dos and dont with pistols? Like anything else a gun can wear out after use. The main thing to consider is to keep it clean and lubricated properly. You aren't going to kill it after a few rounds but you will know when groups start to open up and you get fliers on your targets. A gun is no fun if you don't shoot it. Take care of it and you will be able to enjoy it for a long while.
AJ
Re: what are the dos and dont with pistols? Just because your gun will digest full power loads, if you use light loads for the majority of your shooting, it will extend the time between rebuilds. The last time I had one done by a pro it was about the price of the gun. If you are just paper punching and learning to shoot handguns I highly recommend using 38 special ammo or reduced .357 Mag ammo. Be sure to clean the carbon crud from the cylinders. Smiths are nice looking and shooting but they are far from the strongest guns.
hangunnr
Re: what are the dos and dont with pistols? Ya gotta understand that my 29 ate thousands of full power rounds. I would guess in the neighborhood of 10,000 rounds. The main amount of damage was that the forcing cone was badly eroded. The rifling is still crisp. The barrel was also still very accurate but the blow by coming out the cylinder gap would pepper you with powder residue. I just got tired of getting sand blasted while shooting. With standard loads you likely won't do any harm to a factory barrel. As far as the cost of barrel replacement is concerned. I picked the barrel up off of eBay for about half the cost of a new barrel. The gunsmith I use is a friend so he dosen't charge me anything for labor. hangunnr

Hoosierbuck
Re: what are the dos and dont with pistols? Don't snap the cylinder shut on revolvers like they do in movies. It will throw the cylinder out of alignment and cause problems. HB
