AaronS
I don't know if this would be better here or in the Hunting Equipment section, but it's not really a hunting item, rather a food plot prep item. I'm wanting to find more info on a disc made by Monroe Tufline, specifically the TGE71216 and TGE71218, seen here. It looks like a very good quality little disc for my little tractor. I've ran a google search and haven't found pricing anywhere on the net, nor any dealers close to me. Does anyone have experience with this disc? Does anyone know where I might find pricing info? I've contacted Monroe Tufline but have not heard anything back from them.
LETMGROW
Re: Monroe Tufline help From what I have seen this is a good product. I guess it depends on what you want to use it for and how much time you have to use it. About 5 years ago I bought several acres of land and decided to work it up to plant. This land had not been plowed or worked for 20 or more years. I hired someone to come in with big equipment and prep the land. No way would a small piece of equipment have done this. You must gear the equipment to the job. If you want to plant food plots of only a couple acres and own a small tractor I feel a roto tiller would be a better buy. It's faster, and does a much better job than a disc. If you have only an ATV then you have to gear your equipment to it. Size up your plans [not just the next year] and buy your equipment accordingly.
wtnhunt
Re: Monroe Tufline help If I am not mistaken I think cabelas sells some tuffline products. You might try talking with one of their product specialists. They are pretty knowledge able about the products that they sell.
AaronS
Re: Monroe Tufline help Thanks for the help guys. I agree about the tiller LETMGROW. The one problem with that right now (besides the obvious one...cost) is that I'm in the middle of clearing two new 1/2 acre areas for new plots. I have hundreds of tree stumps ranging from sapling to 6 inches in diameter, and I'd hate to see what they would do to a tiller until they've had a few years to rot. For the first couple of years I think a disc would be the best route. I don't want to buy junk, but I don't want to spend an arm and a leg either. I've looked into renting a disc, but haven't found anything close. My hunting ground is 20 miles away from where I live, so I also don't know of any farmers living nearby that would do it for a fee. Kind of between a rock and a hard place right now.

vagobbln
Re: Monroe Tufline help I to have some small areas to plant, some I can't even get a tractor into probably. So, speaking of tillers, I wonder how this thing would work. It can be pulled behind an ATV. Agrifab Tiller I've been contemplating getting on for a while. Heck, a decent sized walk behind is just as much money. Anybody know anyone who has experience with one?
AaronS
Re: Monroe Tufline help I've looked at those before and have concerns about how they would hold up to what we would use them for. I think roots and rocks would play heck with them.
wtnhunt
Re: Monroe Tufline help Think those lightweight tillers like that would work ok, but dont think they would hold up very well for long term use.
AaronS
Re: Monroe Tufline help After not hearing anything back from Monroe-Tufline I bought a Worksaver brand 45" tandem disk for 20% off at Rural King this weekend. It is the perfect size for my little Kubota, now I just need to modify it to lower the lift pins. The pins are too high and the tractor currently only lifts it about 4" off the ground. wtnhunt
Re: Monroe Tufline help Not familiar with that brand name, but good thing about rural king, they have or can get parts for most of what they sell.
AaronS
Re: Monroe Tufline help I believe it is made in China. The disc I bought looks almost identical to the top disc in this pic. I'll post pics of mine after I lower the lift pins and work some ground with it.
LETMGROW
Re: Monroe Tufline help Sorry I couldn't find my info on tuff-Line. I have torn this place apart looking for it. Anyway the disc you got looks pretty good. What do you care if the disc is only 4" up when raised? Don't lower the pins too much so the discs won't go down enough to cut deep into the soil. If you want to raise the discs more can't you shorten the top link when transporting? Just an idea.
AaronS
Re: Monroe Tufline help The biggest problem with it only raising 4" is for loading and unloading from a trailer. Shortening the top link will raise the rear gangs but the front gangs stay at pretty much the same height. My tractor is plenty small enough that the disc will still cut with the pins lowered. Don't worry about not finding the info, I appreciate that you tried.
wtnhunt
Re: Monroe Tufline help Those pins do look a bit high, looks like you might be able to lower them a little. Good luck with it.
LETMGROW
Re: Monroe Tufline help Today I found the brochure on Tuff-Line. Sorry. I understand your situation with the pins. Instead of lowering them, how about adding two? These are available quite cheaply from Tractor Supply. Could give you the best of both worlds. I'm a little concerned if you just lowered the pins you might not get the depth you want.
AaronS
Re: Monroe Tufline help I've fabricated some brackets that will bolt on to the disc that will lower the bottom pins 6 inches, but will keep the original pins in place. The bracket for the top hole/top link will lower that 6 inches also, but will need to be removed to use the original hole. I am taking photos of the project and will post them when I finish. It will be a couple of weeks before I'll be able to complete it.
LETMGROW
Re: Monroe Tufline help Please don't tell me you took MY advice. If it doesn't work I know NOTHING!
AaronS
Re: Monroe Tufline help Well.....actually I finished the brackets three days before your post, but if it doesn't work can I still blame it on you? I caught the end of a hunting/habitat management show on the Outdoor Channel Friday night where a wildlife biologist modded the back of a disc with a wood drag to bust up clods and prepare a nice seed bed. Of course you know that I now have to do this to mine. My wife and I leave for a trip this Saturday, so after I get back I'll get those brackets in place, try to get the drag built and attached, paint the whole thing pretty Kubota orange to hide the faded red......then maybe I'll finally get some pics. LETMGROW
Re: Monroe Tufline help Go ahead, blame me. But I am sure it will work. LOL I saw the same show. [Great minds work alike] Seems they overcomplicated things a bit, but I think their idea has some merit. Enjoy your trip and be safe. We'll be looking forward to seeing those pictures. AaronS
Re: Monroe Tufline help Hi all, it is time for a "project progress update". I finished modifying my disc over the weekend by lowering the lift pins and giving it a new paint job. This first pic is the disc as I bought it. It is a Wallace Mfg. disc….45” tandem gang. In stock condition my tractor would only lift the front row of disc blades 4” off the ground. That didn’t work for loading and unloading from the trailer. The next two pictures show my tractor/disc combo next to my truck to give you a reference and so you can see just how small it is. Small equipment doesn’t do the best job for ground work, but hey it what I got, and it beats the heck out of a garden hoe. The last two pics are close ups of the setup, so you can see how I lowered the lift pins, and see the pretty new paint job. Now the real test is next……to see if my turf tires will pull the disc when it starts to cut or if they will sit and spin. I’ll let you know when I find out. LETMGROW
Re: Monroe Tufline help Great looking job there. EXCEPT! Can you do anything about those John Deere green weights on the front of the tractor?

All I can say is I got a great deal on them, and I already have paint. They'll be bright orange before long.
wtnhunt
Re: Monroe Tufline help Would think with the turf tires being that your tractor is 4 wd so long as the ground is dry and you do not try to cut too deep it should pull ok.
