H&R Ultra Slug questions?

I am looking to purchase a new H&R Ultra Slug shotgun for deer here in Ohio. What are some thoughts for 12 vs. 20 gauge? Both will take down a deer with a well placed shot, I am interested in hearing the ballistic differences put into an understandable language.

Also, the Ultra Slug vs. Ultra Slug deluxe, are there any major differences?

Thanks in advance! cool.gif

Re: H&R Ultra Slug questions?

Hey Ohio, I have the 12 ga. Ultra Slug Deluxe. I'm not sure of the ballistic difference between the 12 and 20 ga. but do know that the major difference between the Ultra slug and the Deluxe is that the Deluxe has a much heavier barell. If you're planning on carrying it around in the field a lot, you have to keep that in mind. I mostly hunt from a ladder stand, so that is why I opted for the heavy barell. I think the heavy barell is more accurate.

Re: H&R Ultra Slug questions?

I'm no ballistics expert.... I have an USH in 12ga.....

The ONLY drawback is the limited choices for extra barrels to fit the 10ga frame..... with the 20ga USH, you could put anything from a 410 to 12ga barrel on it....

Mine is the 12ga,...... I also have a 10ga barrel that fits for turkey.... those are the only two barrels I can use on it.....

Just depends on if you want more flexibility or hardcore power......

Re: H&R Ultra Slug questions?

For performance, it depends on the ammo used. Typically the 20 ga guns uses lighter slugs than does the 12 ga. Although some are closer, most Remington sabots, Federal sabots, and Winchester sabots favor the 12 ga for performance. The 12 ga has about 50%+ - more energy at 100 yards than the 20 ga does. If the majority of your shots are under 100 yards, it does not mean much. Like 00_buck mentioned, the increased versatility of the smaller frame will give you more options for expanding into different gauge barrels, or if you start with a rifle, you can get a whole bunch of different guns. If you are extending your range to 125 - 150 + yards I would lean towards the 12 ga. The trajectory is similar between the 12 and 20 ga but the big difference is bullet size and energy.

The only differences between the two guns are the stocks. The Deluxe has laminated wood stocks, the standard gun has a walnut stained hardwood stock. The action, trigger, and barrel are the same between the two guns.
