It is a good deer round. It is a little big for my taste but it is used all across this land. Will it work on elk? You bet. It is probably the most common elk and der rifle in use today. I honestly dont think you can go wrong with it. Not to mention the Remington model 700 is a great rifle. Good luck and I hope it provides you with many years of reliable service.

Re: rem. 700???

I own a 700 but in the .243 caliber and I have killed a lot of deer with it and I have not had to track any. I am only using an 85 grain bullett also. I absolutly LOVE IT. I think you would have great success with that gun but I could not tell you what other animals you would be able to hunt with it.

Re: rem. 700???

I own a Rem. 700 30-06.Its my favorite gun and calibre.Best all around rifle in my opinion.Accurate as any rifle on the market,or better. If I were to be able to hunt elk I would take it no question about it.Its a great short range and long range shooter.I wouldn't hesitate to take a shot out to 350yards(my max range for feeling comfortable with).I have shot deer from 15 yards out to 320 yards.None went more than 50 yards.Lots of power for most any big game animal in North America. You got knock down power, short and long range and ACCURACY.What more could you ask for in a rifle??

Re: rem. 700???

The Rem 700 is an outstanding rifle. I am planning on getting a new 700 CDL. The 30-06 is by far my favorite big game caliber. No other cartridge comes close for all around performance. With such a wide variety of loads to choose from and ammo availability no matter where you go what is not to like?
