NFL Salary Cap

This is going to get ugly if they don't fix this today.

If the CBA isn't agreed upon there will be no cap in the NFL salary. You will see guys getting cut left and right. The ESPN guys are saying if it isn't fixed there may never be a cap again and that will kill the NFL.

Can't those greedy folks learn from baseball and hockey.

Will be interesting.

Me, Bill Polian and Boss Irsay will be praying that an agreement doesnt happen. We still might get EJ! "Lord, Help our Colts." - Duke Tomatoe

Re: NFL Salary Cap

If you want James back then you want a deal to happen. No deal=No James.

This is going to turn the NFL upside down. You should see the list of guys that are going to get cut in the next 2 days if they cant work something out. I also think that once they go to an uncapped year they wont ever go back, franchises will be destroyed and lost (jacksonville for example), and if it were to go on for a number of years the NFL would turn into MLB part II.

Hopefully they pull out a miracle and get something signed or this league is in serious trouble. crazy.gif

you would think so wouldn't you MC? I guess they're all just blinded by dollar signs.

like I was telling BB11 via PM...I wouldn't start worrying just yet. Labor talks are always like this, they're just using the deadline to add pressure to the situation...trying to use that to their advantage.

The NFL is so popular because of it's parody, they won't let anything change that.

Re: NFL Salary Cap

[ QUOTE ]

The no cap year begins in 2007 they have a cap this year.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah but no deal this year will affect 2006 too. If they were to get an extension on this deal the salary cap would rise up to around $107 million for 2006. As it stands right now its around $95 million. Most teams just figured that a new deal would get done so they have planned for the salary cap to be around that $107 million dollar mark. Thats why teams are going to be cutting guys like crazy if a new deal isnt going to be reached.

A lot of teams have 10-12 million in cap they have to clear by March 3 when all NFL teams have to be under the cap. Thats why I mentioned in my first post that a guy like Edgerrin James is much more likely to stay with Indy only if a new deal is reached because there will be more cap room available for the Colts to sign him. They have almost no chance to sign him if there isnt a deal reached.

Re: NFL Salary Cap

Heres a pretty good article I just pulled off of Yahoo that explains it pretty well...............

NFL labor talks break off on eve of free agency

By DAVE GOLDBERG, AP Football Writer

March 1, 2006

The sides have agreed on a number of issues. The biggest one is changing the formula for the amount of money to go to the players from "designated gross revenues" -- primarily television and ticket sales -- to "total gross revenues," which include almost every bit a money a a team generates.

They differ, however, on the percentage of revenues to be allocated to the players -- the union is asking for 60 percent and the league's current offer is 56.2 percent.

But there are also disputes among groups of owners on that issue, too. Tagliabue has called a league meeting in New York for Thursday.

Teams with lower revenues -- mostly small-market clubs -- say that if the contributions to the players' fund are equally apportioned among 32 franchises, they will have to pay a substantially larger proportion of their nontelevision and ticket money because they have less. Owners of high-revenue teams, like Dallas' Jerry Jones, claim spreading the load equally would force some teams to work harder to generate new sources of money.

Another high-revenue owner, New England's Robert Kraft, says the formula does not take stadium debt into account, as he has on Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said "internal revenue-sharing issues" would not be discussed at the meeting.

Re: NFL Salary Cap

Its a lose lose situation. If an agreement is reached theres a "50-50" chance to sign James, according to Bill Polian. The negative side is Corey Simon and Ryan Diem will be over cap.

Re: NFL Salary Cap

Either way my Cowboys are in pretty good shape as they are under the current cap, not over like a lot of other teams. I kind of hope a deal doesn't get done that way we can sign some of the guys that are cut. If a deal does get done, we will have even more cap room to go after some free agents, having just missed the playoffs last year we should be in pretty good shape.

Re: NFL Salary Cap

The problem is that the owners can't agree among themselves, so there's noway they'll agree with players.

I saw an interview with the union lawyer, and he kept saying the players want a "fair deal".......I'ld like to choke him with his own tie if he thinks they aren't treated fairly.......how much more money could they want.......it's not like they can spend everything they have already.

I hope they work it out. Even though if they didn't it would benefit teams like the Browns but it is not what the league needs in the long run.

[/ QUOTE ]

It would actually hurt teams like the browns in the long run, but I don't think you'll need to worry. Gene Upshaw has said they are almost there on a deal and it's just a matter of a few more points to clear up.
