AJ
Any of the above will work just fine. My favorite is 165 gr bullets in the 30-06. Black Bears are not armour plated. Typically standard deer loads will work perfectly well on black bears.

Guest Colorado Bob
Re: 30.06 bullet selection For my 2 bears here Colorado--I used factory 180 grain Round Nose. 1 bear I used Win PP & the other was with a Core-lokt. Both worked great. I hunted over bait & the shots were close @50 yards. I would go with round nose bullets in either 180 or 220. I think 150 are a little lite----never tried 165. But I KNOW the 180's work. CB

Jeramie
Re: 30.06 bullet selection I shot a 30-06 for several years. I just switched to a .243 this year. I have shot every bullet immaginable. My favorite was the corelokt. Ive never taken a bear but as AJ stated, any good deer round should work. The CoreLokt and cheap, fly straight, and are deadly. Before you start throwing money out the window on "Premium" rounds give them a try. They will easily get the job done. Btw, ive hit countless deer with a 180grn corelokt. None went more then a few feet (in fact, ive never lost a deer to a corelokt). Thy retain a lot of their weight and they mushroom nicely! brad dryden
Re: 30.06 bullet selection I shoot 180grain to me the cor-lockets dont expand as much but the winchesters seem to expand little more all I have to say is try them both and see what you and or your guns likes. Canadian_Goose
Re: 30.06 bullet selection i've heard nothing but good things about the corelokts, especially coming out of the 30-
bearcat
Re: 30.06 bullet selection As good as the corelokts are, the Corelokt Ultras are even better. They have a little thicker jacket, a slightly higher BC., and best of all they are BONDED. I like bonded bullets, I have had good sucess with them. I have never shot an Elk before, but I have shot a ton of deer and targets with my 30-06's. I think the Hornady Interbond(especially in Light Magnum), the Nosler Accubond, Swift Scirroco, or Federal Fusion bullets in 165 gr. or 180 gr. would be excellent for Elk. Also the Barnes Triple Shock and their new MRX Bullet would probably give the best penetration. Winchester's new XP3, which is an upgraded Failsafe with a Polymer tip has performed excellent on large game so far. Their are so many GREAT big game bullets and factory loads available today that their shouldnt be any problem at all finding some that perform well in the 30-06. AJ
Re: 30.06 bullet selection Not at all. In fact in Maryland, the young girl that shot the first bear of this past season used a .243 Winchester. It was a 211 pound bear. She shot it twice and its as dead as any magnum would have done. Guest Colorado Bob
Re: 30.06 bullet selection litlered---IMO your 30/06 would be a much better choice for black bear. But if all you have is the 243---then

I was simply trying to clarify that ive hunted with a .30-06 for years and I just recently switched to a .243. My goal was to simply show that I do have knowledge of the .30-06 round. Btw, there is no bear hunting in Oklahoma.
