N.Y. Trooper Shot to Death in Gun Battle

BIG FLATS, N.Y. — A state trooper was shot and killed Wednesday in a gun battle with two suspected bank robbers, authorities said. Both were wounded and later captured.

Trooper Andrew Sperr, a 10-year veteran, came upon the men about an hour after the midday bank robbery, Major Steven White said.

When Sperr approached their truck, the men opened fire and Sperr managed to shoot both of them before dying of multiple gunshot wounds, White said.

Sperr, 33, "did his job but it cost him his life," he said.

The suspects, Anthony Horton, 33, and Brian Adams, 45, were in satisfactory condition at hospitals. Both were charged with first-degree murder, White said.

Authorities said they were searching for at least one other suspect Wednesday night.

Adams showed up at an Elmira hospital with a gunshot wound, White said. Horton, who had retreated to a nearby hotel, turned himself in when authorities arrived.

About 20 police units were mobilized in the area after Sperr's body was found. All schools in the Horseheads and Elmira Heights school district were locked down.

The trooper was reportedly killed about 1:30 p-m after an armed bank robbery. But state police Lieutenant Glenn Miner said he could not confirm that, saying details were still sketchy.

Police and the F-B-I are investigating a noontime bank robbery at the Chemung Canal Trust Company in Big Flats, about 10 miles north of the Pennsylvania state line. Bank president Jan Updegraff said no one was injured during the robbery. He said he could not discuss how much money was taken or how many robbers there.

Helicopters were circling and about 20 police units were in the area of Big Flats, near Interstate 86. All schools in the Horseheads and Elmira Heights School District were on lockdown and parents were told to pick their children up at the end of the school day.

The shooting comes two days after a Town of New Hartford police officer near Utica died from a gunshot wound to the neck suffered while chasing a robbery suspect.

Third arrest made

Police made another arrest in Wednesday's bank robbery in the Town of Big Flats, near Elmira. Wayne Adams is behind bars at the Chemung County Jail, charged with robbery in the second degree.

Police say he was a lookout, waiting in his own car, while his brother, Brian Adams, and Anthony Horton robbed the bank. They say those two then killed Trooper Andrew Sperr after making their getaway.

Adams and Horton left in a white pick up truck. They were driving to Lowe Road to switch cars, getting into a green Ford Taurus. That's when Trooper Sperr approached them.

Gunfire was exchanged by the two men, and the trooper returned fire wounding them.

But police say Sperr didn't know the men just robbed a bank.

"We're pretty confident at this point that our trooper was simply executing a vehicle and traffic stop without knowing that the robbery just occurred moments before," said Major Steven White, the Troop D commander.

Sperr was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Horton is expected to be released from the hospital and arraigned. Adams is still in the hospital. Both are charged with murder in the first degree.

The Taurus was found in a river.

Police say they have their key players, but their investigation continues.

Re: Another NY Officer Down

Thankfully they got the last man. No respect for nothing is what these boys had. I would say what I think on this but it wouldnt be pretty. Being a NYS correction officer and son in law to a NYS tropper I can only send prayer to both officers families and hope the parties will rot in jail.
