Strut10
I generally use a 7" circle as my benchmark for for comparison. 7" is about the average distance from the base of a gobbler's wattles to the top of his head. The guns I shoot will put anywhere from the high 60's to well into the 100's of pellets at 40 yards.

PAbowhunter4life
Re: How many pellets at 40yrds 10\" circle? Welp, I am getting 340 BB's (maybe more actually) in a 10" circle @ 40 yards using my 835 with a Rhino choke and Nitro shells, so even if I were to do the 7" circle, I am sure there will still be PLENTY lol. Covehnter
Re: How many pellets at 40yrds 10\" circle? I would say around 80 pellets in a 10" circle is adequate. In a 10" circle around 78.5 sq inches, if your pattern is distribed evenly that roughly means you'll have a pellet per square inch of the area, so if a gobblers head was in that area he'd definately take more than a couple pellets. I believe you could still be more than comfortable with less than that at 40 yards though. But of course, the more the better.
mo_hunter
Re: How many pellets at 40yrds 10\" circle? I would say 100 at 40 yrds in a 10 inch circle. I put 160-170 # 6 3.5 in winchester supreme in a 10 inch circle and 105-115 # 5 winchester supreme 3.5 inch at 40 yrds with my beretta xtrema. If I'm hunting early season and there isn't alot of folage I use the #5's or if hunting a field edge. Later in the season when things green up and the shots will most likely be closer I which to #6"s. Anyway you have more down range killing energy at 40 yrds with with a #5 than a #6. I had a nova and it patterned great with a kicks gobblin thunder .655 with # 6 3.5 winchester supreme. I also patterned it with a undertaker HS .675 my best pattern with the undertaker was with heavyshot # 6 3.5 inch. The undertaker didn't pattern well with winchester supreme # 5 or # 6 3.5 inch. I think # 4 winchester supreme would have pattern better with that choke diam. but I didn't have any to try and I would rather shoot # 5's or # 6's anyway. Good luck hope this helps some. Born2Hunt
Re: How many pellets at 40yrds 10\" circle? I read in the Turkey Call magazine that you should shoot for 100+ pellets at 40 yds.
Strut10
Re: How many pellets at 40yrds 10\" circle? I would suggest you try a different tube. Your numbers sound about on par with what I'd expect with the Undertaker (as compared to your factory full). If you can see fit to spring for a XXX-full Comp-N-Choke tube.......run some of your Supreme #5's through that. If that number of pellets in a 10" circle doesn't tickle you, then try some Supreme #6's. I think you'll be pleased.
Guest Colorado Bob
Re: How many pellets at 40yrds 10\" circle? Dang you guys must be shooting some pretty tite chokes. A 100 hits in a 10" circle @40 yards----another guy with 340 hits at 40 yards !!! I use 2 3/4" shells with #4's @1 1/2 oz---it is 202 pellets. You are saying I need 1/2 of those in a 10" circle @ 40 yards-----That's crazy. I've killed birds @40 yards-------I don't use a 10" inch circle but an actual turkey target with the neck vertebrae & brain outlined. I can put 7 to 9 pellets in that killed zone @ 40 yards. Never lost a bird in over 15 years of hunting them using plain old baby mags & a standard full choke. What are your patterns like @15 yards ? Pretty tite about 3" or 4"----I bet. Too tite IMO----I've taken more birds @ 15 yards than at 40 yards. CB

[/ QUOTE ] At 15 yards my pattern is like a tennis ball lol. Anywho, I too shoot targets with turkey vital areas on it, the 10" circle is just the standard measuring stick to compare patterns. 7-9 pellets will kill a bird no doubt, all it takes is one, but when that gobbler moves his head just as you squeeze off, I bet you'd wish you had more lol. Here is my pattern @ 40 yards. It is off to the left because I was shooting on a windy day to see how it would effect my pattern, usually the shot is directed DEAD CENTER of the turkeys head which as you can see makes for some serious trouble for the tom on the other end..... gitcha_some
Re: How many pellets at 40yrds 10\" circle? what size shot r u shooting that has more than 340 bb's in it??? like size 12?
PAbowhunter4life
Re: How many pellets at 40yrds 10\" circle? I am shooting Nitro Ammo Co. 3.5" 4x5x7 Hevi loads out of a Rhino .695 choke screwed in to a Mossberg 835. Not only do these baby's pattern, but they carry enough downrange energy to take down an elephant if I need them to . I don't know the exact number of BB's in the shell, I think someone did some counts a while ago and it was like 450???? Regardless, I know there are at least 340 in there and I know guys and have read about guys having more than that at 40 yards. Oh, and to answer your comment about a shell having more than 340 BB's in it, did you know a Win. Extended Range 3" 1 3/4oz. #6 load has 400 BB's in it??? snapper
Re: How many pellets at 40yrds 10\" circle? You know it only takes one bb to kill a turkey? I'm shooting a pretty tight set up as well...however, I missed my first ever bird last year. Now there were other variables that lead to the miss...but being close and having a tight pattern didn't help!
LETMGROW
Re: How many pellets at 40yrds 10\" circle? Seems as too tight a pattern can be as bad as too large a pattern. Have to find your optimum range and stick with it

At 15 yards my pattern is like a tennis ball, maybe even smaller. To make a long story short, last year 5 birds got in on me TIGHT and I had to wait for the one I wanted to clear the others. Well, one of the jakes got to within about 5 feet and spooked when my gun slid on my knee a tad. I rushed the shot @ 15 and missed my gobbler, but I regrouped and rolled him at 30.
