Born2Hunt
Does honing a shot gun barrel make a big difference.
AJ
Re: Hone it out? Will it magically allow you to make better shots? No A clean smooth bore will allow the gun to pattern better though. Its not like it will give you another 10 yards in range, but it can add a little. I polish the bores of my shotguns. I have a hone that is like a brake cylinder hone and use some good cutting oil. AJ
Re: Hone it out? I use the hones in the logical steps of coarse to fine. If the bore looks good, I may just use the fine stones. I don't spend hours doing the job. I may use each stone for a few minutes, and move to the next one. I don't know when and/or if you can tell when the optimum level of surface has been reached. I do know that I get less wad fouling after I polish the bore. Check out this PDF Flex Hone Instructions.
Born2Hunt
Re: Hone it out? Looking into the barrel of my 835 it looks like it sure could use some cleaning up. There is a pretty good article in this months issue of turkey and turkey hunting magazine about this.
